Solomon Bernard, a 26-year-old man who allegedly murdered his grandmother so that he could get his inheritance, has been docked before a Benin Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Edo State, reports Daily Post.
According to the police prosecutor, Sunday Lucky, the impatient man killed his maternal grandmother, Mrs Janet Ogbeifun, with a cutlass over a storey building inheritance, an offence that contravenes Section 319 (a) of the Criminal Code, which provides that anyone found guilty shall be sentenced to death.
Bernard allegedly committed the act on November 20 at No. 13, Igunbo Street, Benin City.
The Magistrate, Mrs Taiye Omoruyi, however said the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case and ordered that the accused be remanded in prison pending and the case file duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice, while adjourning the case till February 8.
