Former Scotland captain and Glasgow Warriors scrum-half Mike Blair has retired from professional rugby with immediate effect.

Blair made 85 appearances for Scotland, 14 as skipper, featured in three World Cups, and was part of the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa in 2009.

The scrum-half, who called time on his international career in 2013, will take up a role as assistant coach with Glasgow for next season.

"It was always my intention to move into a coaching role and although there was an opportunity to play on next year, I believe now is the right time for me to make that change," Blair told the club's official website.

"With only a few games left this season, I have unfortunately run out of time to be able to regain my fitness before the end of this campaign."

Blair made nine Pro12 appearances for the Warriors, who are on the brink of a semi-final berth in third position, this season.
