"Each Orangetheory class is a one-hour group fitness experience, with a different workout each day," says Shantira Higgins, NASM-certified personal trainer and Orangetheory coach. And each session includes both cardio and strength training.

What makes Orangetheory unique is that before your first class, you're given a <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g26235633/heart-rate-monitor-watch/" id="cb930518-9662-3fe1-a1a1-925aafec21a1"> heart rate monitor </a> to wear throughout your workout. "During class, your data will be displayed on screens around the room, which will show you how many calories youve already burned, and which heart rate zone youre currently in," says Higgins. "This feedback will help you pace and track your workout, plus allow your coach to provide guidance."

But what are those "zones" exactly? Orangetheory focuses on five different heart rate zones. During workouts, you'll aim to stay in three of them: "Zone 3," or the green zone, which is meant to be challenging but doable; "Zone 4," or the orange zone, which should feel uncomfortable; and "Zone 5," or the red zone, which should be an all out effort. These zones are different for every person, and calculated for you before class.

<h1> What kind of workout should you expect? </h1>

Approximately half of each class is focused on cardio, which includes intervals on the custom Orangetheory treadmills and WaterRowers. "When youre on the treadmill, your coach will cue you through intervals, calling out speed recommendations for runners and joggers, and incline options if you opt to power walk, instead" says Higgins. If <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a27408852/hiit-treadmill-workout/" id="c9f144da-3dad-343d-a286-a0ca312a2863"> treadmills just aren't for you </a> , there's also options to use stationary bikes or striders (similar to ellipticals).

The second half of class focuses on strength training. Depending on the workout that day, you may use TRX straps, benches, free weights, <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g25418209/best-resistance-bands/" id="9b37fbd2-c6f1-3298-afa4-a3872c4fdd96"> resistance bands </a> , BOSU trainers, or <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Ab-Dolly-AB-Plus/dp/B00T328E8Q" id="631196b3-e1c5-3732-a100-e468d2d1d0c2"> AB Dollys </a> , says Higgins. "Before you start your floor work, your coach will demonstrate each exercise, and then while youre working, there are TV screens with coaches demonstrating the movements, as well as cues for how many sets and reps to do of each," she adds.

Your Orangetheory coach will also help you choose the right weights for you, and consistently check your form and technique, to make sure you're safely and effectively performing each exercise.

<h1> Do you need to have fitness experience before taking Orangetheory? </h1>

Absolutely not! "One of the greatest parts of the Orangetheory workout is that it truly is designed for every fitness level," says Higgins. "Ive coached everyone from my grandmother, to first-time gym-goers, to Super Bowl athletes. Your Coach is trained to make sure youre performing the movements safely, so dont feel like you need any sort of gym background."

And while those treadmills may be a deterrent for any non-runners, as mentioned, there are other ways to get your cardio fix: Opt to power walk, ride a bike, or choose the strider. "Ive done all three during workouts, and the cardio can be just as tough as running on the treads," says Higgins.

<h1> What kind of Orangetheory results can you expect? </h1>

Higgins says there are so many great benefits of Orangetheory classes. For starters, "one of our focuses during the workout is to help you earn your 'afterburn,' which is scientifically known as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption, or <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a19998340/epoc-excess-post-exercise-oxygen-consumption/" id="d1dd8aa3-8645-3432-a4c4-bfed96ade078"> EPOC </a> ," she says. To achieve this "afterburn," your coach will use your heart rate data to help you reach the orange and red zones for at least 12 minutes of class. "The idea is, if you can work hard and get uncomfortable for just 12 or more minutes during your workout, youll reap the benefits of increased calorie burn for the next 36 hours," explains Higgins.

And beyond major cal-burn, Higgins notes that you'll also build muscle and promote overall functional strength, thanks to that 30-minutes of strength-training per class. She adds that, "increasing muscle will also help you burn more calories throughout the day! So, in addition to the afterburn, youll also benefit from extra calories burned on the daily."

<h1> What should you wear to an Orangetheory class? </h1>

"Like any <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a23842114/hiit-workout-routine/" id="9cc43f91-9c99-3198-ad63-87f664342842"> high-intensity workout </a> , it's important that you wear clothing you can move and sweat in," says Higgins. "Comfortable, <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g19820093/best-summer-workout-gear/" id="c2d8ca59-7a78-3c0c-ab19-e380e7648f9b"> moisture-wicking fabric </a> is perfect. Whatever you might wear running or to the gym should do the trick."

Higgins recommends coming 30 minutes before your first class begins so you can meet your coach, learn more about the equipment, and get set up with your heart rate monitor. Oh, another pro tip from Higgins: Not every location has sweat towels, so bring your own, along with a water bottle.

After class, "you might want to hightail it out of there to take a sweaty post-gym selfie and a shower," she jokes. "But it's just as important to stay for the flexibility portion of the class. Your coach will guide you through stretches, and make sure you have an effective cool-down."

Lastly, once you've conquered your first class (congrats!), plan to stay afterward to chat with your coach. "They'll explain your workout summary and what all the numbers, colors, and zones mean," says Higgins. "Based on your goals and current fitness routine, your coach will give you recommendations for your next class and how to continue to achieve your fitness goals."

"Theres a million <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a19983280/best-butt-exercises/" id="a1dbe8d8-0784-3925-a456-b5181bb4b2d9"> glute exercises </a> out there, but that doesnt mean theres a million good glute exercises," Pasternak (who's also previously worked with Lady Gaga, Hilary Duff, Rihanna, and countless other celebs) told Women's Health. His opinion: "Squats arent a great glute exercise at all, so I dont do squats with my clients."

Why, exactly? While they're a time-honored move, Pasternak notes that for squats to be effective, you need to add a lot of weight onto your back using a barbell. "Loading your spine with all that weight, putting your shoulder girdle back to hold the bar, thats all really tough on your body," he says.

Additionally, most people (read: probably you) are stronger on one side of the body than the other. "Whether its that toe you stubbed as a kid, that ankle you rolled playing sports, that knee that bugs you-there's something that's going to cause you to compensate."

And when you're doing an exercise like a squat, which involves two legs at once, it's really hard to tell what percentage of effort your left side is exerting versus your right. "The stronger side will continue to get stronger, the weaker side will continue to get neglected," says Pasternak, "and your glutes arent getting what they need."

Instead, Pasternak recommends opting for isolateral exercises (a.k.a. single-sided moves). His favorite: <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a19895809/side-lunges/" id="11bf3584-e1b1-3edc-a351-eed5a1c095f2"> Lunges </a> ! That includes forward lunges, reverse lunges, <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a19895809/side-lunges/" id="b731cfd4-7e1a-39c0-a82a-1f37bc076d55"> side lunges </a> , skater lunges, the list goes on. "Since these are isolateral, your dominant side doesn't have a chance to take over," he says. "And you're getting a deeper range of motion than you would with a squat, so your glute has to work harder." Isolateral exercises like lunges also create an unbalanced environment for your body, "so your <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a19996405/best-ab-exercises/" id="f6bd37c3-8f07-3e5e-ab89-80fed13b4f6f"> core </a> really has to compensate to keep your body upright."

How to: Stand up tall, then take a large step forward. From here, bend your knees and lower your body until your legs form 90-degree angles. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds, then repeat on the other side.

Pasternak also prefers lunges since they mimic every day life. "We tend to do more things on one foot," he says. "When you walk, you never have two feet on the ground at once. We walk on the stairs one leg at a time."

Now, Pasternak does admit that sometimes he'll throw a plyometric <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a20699322/squat-jump/" id="079806cf-1360-3fc7-a597-7c7012c25e1f"> jump squat </a> in at the end of his workouts, for a fun change of pace. But he ensures clients do this move on a soft surface, with a <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g25418209/best-resistance-bands/" id="083e218d-24ac-339e-ab2d-54623f2a4e4c"> resistance band </a> wrapped around their thighs for additional-activation, and with nothing but bodyweight.

Other than that tiny exception, this celebrity trainer gives you full permission to nix squats from your routine-for good.

How to: Stand in front of a low bench or step with both feet underneath your body. Place your left toes on the bench so your foot is elevated two to four inches off the ground. Hop your front foot forward (proper distance may take some trial and error) until your right foot is directly below your knee when you lower down into a full squat.

Bulgarian split squat is a great lower-body strength exercise that tones the quads and glutes.

Engage your core and your glutes and lower down with control. Most of your weight should be in your front leg with the back primarily used for balance. Stop when your back knee hovers just off the ground, or when you are as low as you feel comfortable. Drive through your front foot and squeeze your glutes as you stand back up, tall and centered over your front leg.

Reps/sets for best results: This move will light up your lower body, even without weight, so aim for lower volume sets-four to five rounds of five to eight reps.

<h1> Benefits Of Bulgarian Split Squats </h1>

The Bulgarian split squat is a great <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a20703896/butt-and-thigh-workout-0/" id="c6a56833-1ab4-36a9-a8aa-a6d033ac83ad"> lower-body </a> strength exercise that primarily focuses on the quads and <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a19983280/best-butt-exercises/" id="eb45e9bf-881f-3489-a136-c8a4199c6262"> glutes </a> . The biggest perk of this move, over others, is that it helps develop functional, single-leg strength and power.

By putting somebody in a single-leg stance, you can identify weakness and strength in a more functional way than you could with symmetrical-stance squats or <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a26679436/how-to-deadlift/" id="d6ce78c9-e0cd-3d31-a36e-c39d1f56b9a6"> deadlifts </a> , Murrieta says.

That means whether you run races, play intramural soccer, or just want to to balance out your body, this move should be in your strength program.

The best way to work it in: As one of the first moves on <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a20703896/butt-and-thigh-workout-0/" id="2c2ffc10-a39d-3051-a698-e5e05032df2d"> lower-body strength </a> day, after a <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/g26554730/best-warm-up-exercises/" id="a1e2331b-12d6-37aa-afb7-ed782fa2a79a"> warm-up </a> but before <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a19920429/full-body-workout/" id="54f66db6-8ae6-3f0f-a913-1c2330fad05c"> full-body </a> fatigue exercises, Murrieta says. He prefers to combine it with other athletic training-footwork drills, running drills, plus isolated moves like pistol squats, single-leg hip thrusts, and <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/a27423100/single-leg-deadlift-exercise/" id="428fc288-dfa6-3aac-afd8-c3b6ecc5a6fc"> single-leg deadlifts </a> .

You can incorporate the move safely up to four to five times a week.

TBH, the Bulgarian split squat is super hard as is, so start with both feet on the ground if you want to make it easier at first. Taking the balance aspect out of the equation will let you develop the foundational strength, Murrieta says.

To make it more difficult, add some weight-dumbbells held at your sides, a kettlebell in front of your chest, or a barbell in a back rack position. But start light, Murrieta says-small weights add up fast for this move.

If a Bulgarian split squat conjures an image of a Khal drogo-type flexing quads of steel, well, youre not wrong. The advice he gives to his clients like Jen: Don't think of fueling in terms of what to eat just before your workout, think about treating your body right all the time. "The common misconception about hydration is that you should wait until youre thirsty, and then drink until youre full," he tells Women's Health. "But if you pound water right before your workout, youll just feel heavy and full and sluggish the entire time." Instead, plan ahead...like, way ahead. As in, "you should be drinking water consistently throughout the days leading up to your workout," he advises.

As far as food goes, Azubuike encourages Jen to go for healthy fats. "I love avocados, coconut oil, salmon, fish oil-anything thats a good form of fat is great," he says. For carbs and protein, he notes that everyone needs a different intake in their daily diet to fuel an active lifestyle. "For me, I stick to 1.7 grams of carbs and 2 grams of protein per my kilo weight to support muscle-building."

About an hour prior to activity (like a run, for example), "I'll go for a scoop of peanut butter, half a banana, and some bread," he says. "I know thats going to help me get me through that run. When my body needs to tap into a fuel source, that's going to get me there."

But Azubuike points out that fueling your body for fitness is very individual-and what might work for him or Jennifer may not be helpful for you.

"It takes trial and error to see what works best," he recommends. One of Azubuike's favorite ways to become more aware is by keeping a fitness journal. "Write down how certain foods you ate make you feel during a workout," he says. "And also journal what days you mentally werent checked in as well, and why, in case that made an impact. Maybe its because you didnt sleep well, it was rainy outside, etc."

Allow the rice to cool. </li><li> In another medium saucepan, bring the lentils and cup (180 ml) of water to a boil and cook for 30 minutes, or until the lentils are slightly tender. Resist oversoaking-even if the paper is a bit stiff, it will continue to absorb water as you assemble the wrap. Place the paper on a clean work surface. </li><li> Arrange the rice, lentils, cilantro, avocado, beets, carrots, daikon, and strawberries down the center of the wrappers lengthwise. To roll, carefully fold up one of the short ends of the wrappers over the filling.
