Weekly sex seems to be enough to maintain the connection, and the happiness boost is really about prioritizing intimacy and sexnot about keeping score, OReilly says. While it doesnt matter what your exact frequency is with your partner, if you want to be having more sex, thats something you and your partner should have a conversation about. <h1> How much sex is everyone else having, though? </h1>

There are only select statistics and anecdotal evidence to go by when it comes to frequency of couples of having sex. And then you've got to remember that people tend to exaggerate about their sex life, says OReilly. <a id="f906d83b-6d19-3b3b-a9e6-992d0db293c0" href="https://www.medicaldaily.com/am-i-normal-average-sex-frequency-week-linked-age-421328"> Data </a> from the Kinsey Institutes Sex, Reproduction and Gender research team discovered Americans who are in the 18 to 29 age category report having sex about 112 times a year (that equates to about twice a week). Couples age 30 to 39 admit to about 86 sex sessions per year. The frequency tends to dip slightly in adults older than that, but about 28 percent of people over 45 are still having sex about once weekly, according to the <a id="97653ea9-727f-395e-a51c-3fefb2c601dd" href="https://kinseyinstitute.org/research/faq.php"> Kinsey Institute </a> .

But these are just the numbers people report. Another way to put it, is that for Americans in relationships, the most commonly reported frequency is somewhere between three to four times per month, OReilly says. That is almost equivalent to the University of Toronto research that claims that sex once a week equals happiness in your relationshipso maybe they have a point there.

<h1> Why is regular sex even a big deal? </h1>

There are studies out there suggesting sexual frequency means higher satisfaction in a relationship. But, OReilly argues, regular sex isnt actually that big of a deal, and sexual satisfaction actually varies from couple to couple. Some people have happy relationships and dont have sex, and some people dont experience sexual attraction or desire at all, she says. There are people who dont innately desire sex (or desire it less frequently than other people), and theres nothing abnormal about thatthey actually might be happier with less sex in those cases, OReilly adds.

Its completely up to you and what makes you and your partner feel fulfilledthat could mean you both only want to have sex once a month or so. If so, great. Anecdotally, OReilly says, couples who feel sexually satisfied, which typically means theyre happy with the quality and quantity of sex in their relationship, report feeling more connected with each other, and greater satisfaction in the relationship as a whole.

They also might feel that sex relieves tension in their relationship if theres any kind of disagreement, along with stress in general. The more frequently you have sex and the more open you are with one another in the bedroom, you will likely have an easier time communicating your fantasies and desires with your partner, OReilly says. However, just because youre not having sex every night, it doesnt mean that youre not communicating well or that you're unhappy.

<h1> What if my number isnt the same as other couples? </h1>

Your number of sex sessions per week only matters as much as you feel it matters. If you dont match up with the statistics, it doesnt mean something is wrong with your sex life at all. Likewise, if youre getting it on more frequently than other couples seem to be, its not a tell-tale sign of a satisfying sex life, OReilly says. You may have sex more often than other couples, but it still may not be as much as you or your partner want it, she adds.

If youre in the camp who wants to have sex more often, its important to have candid conversations with your S.O. about how regularly you actually want sex. If you want sex more often than your partner, youre more likely to underestimate their interest and theyre likely to do the opposite and overestimate yours, OReilly says. The tough thing is knowing where to even begin with this conversation. First of all, you cant assume your kids have no idea whats going on, no matter how discreet you think youve been. You may not have all the answers to the questions your kids come up with when you have the initial divorce talk with them, but keep them in the loop as you work those details out. Vacca recommends working out the logistics about co-parenting with your partner ASAP, and then explaining them to your kids together in order to provide them more stability throughout the process.

These details should include where the children will be living once the parents are no longer living together, what the plan is for finding a new home for the parent who is moving out, and what the schedule will be for the children to spend time with each parent, Vacca says.

Keep in mind that theres no perfect solution or right way to cohabitate or co-parent after a divorceyou have to figure out, often with trial and error, what will work for your family. Some parents might be still living together while they work everything out, but may have a schedule with an on duty and off duty parent to minimize the parents' interaction.

Let the kids in on the schedule and living arrangements so that its easier to understand where they will be staying and when, and even how they will get from one home to another, Vacca says.

Even while you and your partner might not have every post-divorce detail worked out, sticking with your kids' regular routine is important. Keep them involved in their activities and keep their schedules as normal as possible, says Campbell. So that even though your kids know things at home are about to change in a major way, they can count on the other parts of their lives to look the same.

They can help mediate the conversations between you and your ex, and between the the two of you and your children. And if you ever have to switch up your parenting agreement in any way, that warrants a conversation between you, your ex, and a mediator, lawyer, or a therapist, suggests Vacca. That way, you have a third party to help iron out the details about when each parent will take the kids and what their specific responsibilities are during that time.

Trash-talking your ex, especially in front of your kids, is not going to be healing for anyonedont do it, Campbell warns. But there's no need to panic if your vagina and/or vulva is irritated. There are a ton of reasons this can happen, and plenty you can do to find relief. The one thing you don't want to do is ignore the issueand if you're here, you're already taking the first step to figure out what's going on.

Here's the deal: Sometimes, a rash on the vulva can be caused by something as simple as using a new detergent or chafing from your underwear, but in other cases, it can be a sign of a couple different kinds of infections, and in that case, you definitely want to talk to your health care provider to know for sure what's up.

No matter the issue at hand, how it progresses is a key indicator of how serious it is, says <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B-Xm1FOHRLX/" id="29dfff86-b36d-31b5-a49f-b7f9a30956df"> Jessica Shepherd </a> , MD, ob-gyn and Women's Health advisory board member. If you've noticed a chance in the typical look or smell of your vulva area, monitor the progress of itif its going away on its own, its probably nothing major, but if its causing you more irritation than when it started, it's time to talk to your doc.

There are a few possible culprits of a rash or bumps near your vagina, experts say, and some may have more distinct symptoms. These are some of the most common potential causes for vaginal rashes, and how you can treat the irritation and avoid it in the future.

<h1> If you recently waxed or shaved, its likely contact dermatitis. </h1>

The most common cause of a rash on the vulva, Dr. Shepherd says, is contact dermatitis (and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3966341/" id="1832ff8b-e252-319d-ac27-4866651c45f1"> research </a> has found that about 50 percent of rashes near the vagina are contact dermatitis-related). Typically, its <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/beauty/a19983003/brazilian-wax-before-and-after/" id="1a468a8f-34f3-3c57-a85e-a4bbbe4236b5"> waxing </a> or <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a19903677/how-to-shave-your-bikini-line/" id="d071fe94-916c-335a-adb4-54b1c5eb6f86"> shaving </a> that can cause folliculitis (a form of irritation from ingrown hair follicles) that's to blame for contact dermatitis.

Other cases of contact dermatitis may happen from friction from your underwear or clothing, especially if youre working out frequently and not changing your underwear immediately afterward. Its just as likely that the rash could be chemical irritation from using a different detergent on your laundry than normal, Dr. Shepherd adds.

During your period, wearing the wrong size pads or tampons, or leaving them in too long, could be a culprit of a rash or redness down there. It can also happen if you have bladder leakage, especially <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a26239050/postpartum-guide/" id="7d7d47a4-e7b5-3e7d-aab3-deb1c0a5e8e3"> postpartum </a> . Urine that leaks between pads and underwear can irritate the vulva because it traps moisture, Dr. Shepherd says. Keeping the skin around the vagina clean and dry can help you avoid contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis will be mild in many cases, and the rash can clear up on its own. If its severe and persistently painful, Dr. Shepherd suggests checking in with your ob-gyn to have it evaluated.

<h1> If you have irritation accompanied by odor or discharge, it may be a bacterial infection. </h1>

Infections like <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a23286305/yeast-infection-vs-bacterial-vaginosis/" id="ed18c4f1-410e-3f5f-a397-84c9922fa3d4"> bacterial vaginosis </a> (BV) usually arent associated with a full-on rash, but there might be pain and swelling involved that change the way things look in the area around the vagina. Another clue might be a thick discharge and abnormal odor. It occurs when theres an overgrowth of normal bacteria in the vagina, Dr. Shepherd explains.

If you think you might have BV, its best to give your doctor a call to do some testing and rule out an STI or other infection, says Dr. Shepherd. Some BV infections are treated by antibiotics, but you need a prescription from a doctor to get them.

<h1> If theres itchiness, redness, and burning, especially during sex , it could be a yeast infection. </h1>

Like bacteria, yeast is normally found in the vagina, but a pH imbalance can throw things off and cause an overgrowth of it. <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/g19681838/yeast-infection-symptoms-in-women/?utm_campaign=womheal-2020-tradetracker&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=tradetracker&amp;utm_term=137180" id="eba4c6d8-b9cb-3b59-a111-fd311f9258c4"> Yeast infection symptoms </a> can include vaginal burning, swelling, and thick discharge.

Yeast infections dont always cause a rash, but its possible they will, Dr. Shepherd says. You may experience intense itching, redness of the labia and skin around the vagina, and burning, either after peeing or after sex.

You may be able to treat it with an over-the-counter antifungal treatment, but its ideal to check in with your gyno before you do (especially if youve never had yeast infections in the past), so they can make sure you get a treatment with the right strength to nix the infection.

<h1> If youve recently had unprotected sex, theres a chance its an STI. </h1>

Every STI is slightly different and has a different treatment plan. But if the rash youre experiencing is new and causing quite a bit of irritation, it should be checked out, particularly if youve had unprotected sex with partners who might be STI-positive. And, if you see your ob-gyn, they can rule out other infections first before running the full panel of STI testing.

Here are the possible STI infections that might be causing that rash:

<ul><li> Herpes. The first time you experience a herpes rash, it can be very painful, even to sit down or to pee, Dr. Shepherd says. One <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a19089809/herpes-symptoms-in-women/?utm_campaign=womheal-2020-tradetracker&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=tradetracker&amp;utm_term=137180">symptom of genital herpes</a> is tiny little blisters on the vulva or near the crease of your underwear. </li><li> Syphilis. This will cause lesions, but they are not typically painful like a herpes outbreak, explains Dr. Shepherd. Other <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/g19513578/syphilis-symptoms-in-women/?utm_campaign=womheal-2020-tradetracker&amp;utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=tradetracker&amp;utm_term=137180">syphilis symptoms</a> might be rashes appearing on other parts of your body, too. </li><li> Scabies. A scabies infection will involve severe itching, but a smaller rash, Dr. Shepherd says. It wont be as painful as herpes, mostly just uncomfortable. </li><li> Pubic lice. Just like head lice, pubic lice will cause extreme itching and irritation, Dr. Shepherd says, but higher up than the vagina, in the pubic hair. </li></ul>

<h1> If the rash is very red and inflamed, it could be psoriasis. </h1>

Its definitely less common to see a rash near the vagina that can be attributed to <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/beauty/a19973835/psoriasis-instagram-photos/" id="63e4b15a-8992-3e17-ad68-13888bc5de10"> psoriasis </a> . But if you already have the condition, theres at least a <a href="https://www.psoriasis.org/about-psoriasis/specific-locations/genitals" id="d46785c7-2a17-3248-a9a3-b0443ecff813"> 30 percent chance </a> you could develop a genital psoriasis rash, according to the National Psoriasis Foundationand it will be very uncomfortable (think inflammation and redness to the max).

Youll likely have other breakouts of psoriasis elsewhere on your body, too. The rash will have lots of lesions, Dr. Shepherd says, and there are not many topical agents or salves that will help it to calm down.

If you have a <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/a19928148/living-with-psoriasis/" id="d8fc5b7c-b390-3ccc-a942-ac7b7c237b2e"> severe case of psoriasis </a> , a doctor may prescribe you certain oral medications. But its best to see a dermatologist, particularly if you havent yet been diagnosed with psoriasis.

<h1> There are some at-home remedies for a rash on the vulva. </h1>

Minor rashes, especially from contact dermatitis, can be treated at home easily and might even dissipate on their own. Actually, the best form of treatment is leaving the area alone and keeping it dry, Dr. Shepherd notes. Although you might want to turn to creams or lotions to stop the itching, they actually might make the rash more irritated (especially if they contain fragrance).

Keep moisture away, especially if you work out or swim often, by changing out of your sweaty clothes or bathing suit right away, Dr. Shepherd suggests. And at night, air things out by going commando, she adds. And while you have the rash, you might want to take a break from shaving or waxing (especially if you suspect that's what caused it in the first place).

<h1> When in doubt, don't hesitate to check in with your doctor. </h1>

If your vulva is consistently irritated, or the rash is getting more painful, give your ob-gyns office a call, Dr. Shepherd says. Most likely, your doctor will have you come in for an appointment.

During the visit, your gyno will start by figuring out when the rash started appearing, and if its something youve ever experienced before. The checkup will continue with an exam of the perineum and any areas you wouldnt be able to see on your own.

The doctor will examine the vagina through a speculum to check for discharge and inflammation, and may take vaginal swabs to test for infections. If there are visible lesions on the vulva, your doctor can take swab samples from those to test too, Dr. Shepherd says.

Typically, Dr. Shepherd explains, your doc will be able to identify a BV or yeast infection right away. If theyre concerned about a possible STI, itll take two or three days to get your results back.

<h1> Here are a few things to keep in mind to avoid rashes in the vagina region. </h1>

Since so many rashes stem from irritation of the area, make sure youre always wearing <a href="https://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/g28626566/breathable-underwear/" id="48c21249-f58b-3fc4-ace6-d526d8c49ea4"> clean undies </a> , especially after a workout. That's especially important during your periodmake a point to change tampons or pads frequently, and wear the appropriate size pad or tampon for your flow so that youre not adding extra friction from moisture into the mix.

And certainly if you have an allergic response the first time you take elderberry, such as hives, tongue or lip swelling, stop taking it immediately, Dr. Goldstein adds.

Still, not everyone should take elderberry. There's some speculation that elderberry could cause an immune system flare-up for people who have an autoimmune condition or have had an organ transplant, though this hasnt been proven.
