It has been twelve months filled with lots of academic success stories worth retelling and celebrating.
Some students made significant impact bothlocally and internationally and we take you through some of the names that stood out during the year under review.
Sarfo-Ansah Wonder “The Wonder Boy” and Daniel Osei Badu
The duo won the 2017 National Science and Maths Quiz for Prempeh College in spectacular fashion. After their impressive record-setting performance that saw them amass an unprecedented 82 points, the eventual winners, went all out to clinch their school’s fourth championship making them the second most successful school in the competition, one trophy behind Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School.
Dr. Ellen Aboakye
The former student of the Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School in Kumasi, Dr Ellen Boakye won 10 awards at the Vice-Chancellor’s Academic Award Ceremony held at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana. She was at the University Of Ghana Medical School.
Dr. Fathia Karim
The graduating female medical student of the School of Medical Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) set a record when she won 13 of the 15 awards presented during an award ceremony.
Mathew Paa Kwesi Williams
The 17-year-old student of Morgan International Community School won the “Award of Excellence” for his image “Struggle of Childhood” during the 2017 Sustainable Development Goals Student Photo Competition held in Tokyo, Japan. He won a cash prize of 20,000 Japanese Yen, approximately GHC800, a Camera, Photo Books, among others.
Christopher Animalia and Bright Asiedu
The NSMQ stage has seen some wonderful contestants grace the competition with sheer brilliance and scientific accuracy but when the story of the 2017 edition is written, the pair of Christopher Animalia and Bright Asiedu from St. Thomas Aquinas SHS will have a chapter or two dedicated to their excellence. The two, who showed great chemistry between them throughout the competition and managed to record the second highest score this year, 67. They almost caused a last round takeover when they answered the first two riddles to cut down an 8 point deficit to 2 before losing out on the final two riddles to finish the contest two points behind the winners, Prempeh College.
Zuweira Baba Mohammed
The Tamale High School student stood out among the female contestants in this year’s National Science and Maths Quiz and became the first winner of the Prof. Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu award for the Best Female Contestant. Her light shone brightest when she answered all four riddles to send the quarterfinal contest into a tiebreaker. She earned herself the nickname “Gadasuwaa” for her prowess in Riddles.
John-Edwin Gadasu
The St. Peter’s High School student who was part of the team that represented the school at the 2017 National Science and Maths Quiz inked his name in the history books of the competition after pulling off some spectacular show of knowledge during the Riddle round. In a round of 16 contest between Mfantsipim, it was evident the Cape Coast school was runaway winners leading St. Peter’s by 12 points. The Perscoba had banked all their hopes on John-Edwin Gadasu who had been tagged “The King of Riddles”. In a moment of magic, Persco answered all four riddles to clear the deficit and send the contest to a tiebreaker. Even though Persco lost the contest, the name Gadasu will forever be remembered whenever the 2017 edition is recounted.
A team of Ghanaian Model UN students from Life-link Friendship Schools Ghana, won two awards for Resolution Projects they presented at the 2017 Harvard National Model United Nations conference in Boston, USA.
The Eureka team, represented by Kobby Afari Yeboah, Harriet and Hilary Adare’s project, was centered on dyslexia among children. Learning a new language, presented by Rejoice Dufie, also emerged winners.
Eyram Norgbey
He won the Green Talent Award organized by the German government for his research on promoting sustainable environment. The 27-year-old Ghanaian student was among 25 young people from 21 different countries across the world who were awarded at a ceremony in Berlin, Germany.
Mr. Pius Kyere, a former student of St James Seminary Senior High School in Sunyani and Mr Benjamin Bortey Sango, a former student of Accra Academy in Accra placed first and second, respectively, in the WAEC International Excellence Awards.
