Addo joined a number spellers at the University of South Dakota on Saturday, March 18, 2017, in the state final.
The Ghanaian was crowned the champion beating 14 other spellers who advanced through the school and regional competitions.
Nana Addo of Dakota Dunes is the third Ghanaian to make it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee set for May 28 to June 2 in Washington, D.C.

Lily Ama Tugbah of Solidarity International School was the first Ghanaian to qualify after beating 196 other spellers in Ghana’s Spelling Bee.

Winner of the 10th edition of Ghana’s Spelling Bee, Lily said:
“I feel so excited. I can't believe this is happening. I'm grateful to everybody, especially God for helping me come this far. My parents, my family, my friends, everybody has helped me make this dream a reality.”
Adom Appiah, a seventh-grade student at the Spartanburg Day School earned his ticket to join Lily after emerging champion in the 2017 Upstate Regional Spelling Bee.

13-year-old Appiah had to battle her cousin Caroline Yirenkyi on his road to victory.
Adom said following his win at the 2017 Upstate Regional Spelling Bee:
“I’m so excited and just surprised. Studying through the spelling words, they were all categorized by etymology. So it helped me narrow it down to which word it would be.”
