Stallone will serve as an executive producer on the TV show, which is being developed as an "event series" along the lines of last year's 24: Live Another Day (12 episodes long) or this year's forthcoming Heroes Reborn (13 episodes long). NCIS: Los Angeles creator Shane Brennan will steer The Expendables event series as showrunner.
According to Deadline, the event series is being conceived as "a fun action drama that unites iconic TV stars as a new team of highly-skilled heroes who are on a mission to stop a dangerous terrorist". US network Fox has ordered a script for the event series but the casting process has yet to begin.
However, popular TV stars such as Tom Selleck (Magnum P.I., Kiefer Sutherland (24), Jennifer Garner (Alias) and Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess are already being mooted as potential cast members.
Created and written by Stallone, the first Expendables film united iconic big screen action heroes including Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren and became a surprise box office smash in 2010. Sequels followed in 2012 and 2014 and a fourth film is now in the works.
