A bride-to-be from Kerala, India caused a buzz on social media after she announced to her friends via Facebook that her wedding had been cancelled.

Remya Ramachandran on the social media platform said her fiance's family had demanded for a dowry before the wedding could take place.

The angry woman also said she called off her wedding because was totally against the practice of dowry payment because she believed that “buying such an unreliable man and his family is a loss.”

“Before the engagement they had said they wanted only me. Post the engagement, they demanded 50 sovereigns of gold and 5 lakh rupees,”  Hindustan Times quoted her as saying.

“This is for all those who ask me about my wedding date. The family, which earlier said they wanted only me, demanded 50 sovereigns of gold and 5 lakh rupees after the engagement. I am against the practice of dowry and I believe that buying such an unreliable man and his family at such a big sum is a loss. Hence I am calling off the wedding. Thanks,” the viral post which the bride-to-be put on Facebook read.

“Please don’t use my post for personalised humiliation, instead use it against our social norms,“ she later posted a few days later explaining that the information was just to communicate to her circle of friends.
