A hat-trick from Filip Forsberg saw the Nashville Predators to a comfortable NHL win, while Evgeni Malkin made his return from injury for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Forsberg scored three times in the second period to lead the Predators to a 5-0 thrashing of the St Louis Blues.

Craig Smith and Colin Wilson netted either side of Forsberg's treble at the Bridgestone Arena as the win marked the Predators' fourth straight, while it was the Blues' third consecutive loss.

Malkin made his return from a knee injury and while he finished without a point, his Penguins claimed a 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Carl Hagelin was the hero with two goals and Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves.

Also coming back was Claude Giroux, the Philadelphia Flyers captain scoring in a 4-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes.

Giroux had missed three games with an upper-body injury but put his team ahead in the second period and it was a lead they would never relinquish.

Late goals from Brad Richards and Darren Helm helped the Detroit Red Wings past the Colorado Avalanche 5-3.

The duo broke a tied game, played in front of 50,095 fans outdoors at Coors Field.

Brandon Dubinsky scored the only goal of the shoot-out as the Columbus Blue Jackets edged the Florida Panthers 4-3.

Mika Zibanejad scored a third-period hat-trick as the Ottawa Senators rallied for a 6-4 win over the Calgary Flames.

The Los Angeles Kings stretched their winning run to four games with a 2-0 victory against the Buffalo Sabres.

The New York Rangers recorded a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars and Max Pacioretty netted twice in the third period in the Montreal Canadiens' 4-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
