4 Ghanaian stowaways tried to escape to the Netherlands but failed due to improved security

The Tema Port Security Manager has warned of the new security measures after four people were arrested for illegally trying to escape.

Benjamin Aidoo, Bernard Owoo, Yussif Musah and Emmanuel Mensah’s quest for greener pastures abroad turned out not to be as planned.

Aged 21, 18, 26 and 22 respectively, the Ghanaians were apprehended by security officials at the Tema Harbour cutting short their illegal act.

However, their journey from land to vessel M/V AS Carelia at Berth 1 of Meridian Port Service was tactful but not an easy task.

Reports indicate the four arrested Ghanaians were ferried on a boat from the Tema Fishing Harbour to the vessel where they used bamboos to find their way onto M/V AS Carelia.

Benjamin, Bernard, Yussif and Emmanuel have been handed to the Ghana Immigration Service who will proceed with the necessary actions.

Commenting on the situation at stake, Port Security Manager Lt Colonel Joseph Punamane warned that the improved security measures at the port will make it difficult for stowaways. He went on to admonish that people willing to leave the country should only go by legal means.

“The port is no-go-area, we have improved the systems, CCTV cameras, security is high so they cannot use the port.

“We have trained some dogs, they will be operational soon and it will be difficult so they should not even dare. They should not attempt to stowaway at this port,” Punamane said.

The four who were arrested had gari (a local stable made from cassava), Fanta, water, rope, biscuits, glucose and paracetamol for medication as a means of surviving the illegal long journey.
