Scores trapped in Nsuta mining pit; rescue mission underway

The miners were said to have been trapped since Sunday following a heavy downpour.

About 14 illegal miners are reportedly trapped in a mine at Prestea-Nsuta in the Western Region.

The Nsuta District Police commander, Superintendent Atsu Dzinaku who confirmed the incident to Accra-based Joy FM said that five of the miners managed to come out from the collapsed pit.
Rescue efforts are underway to rescue those who are still trapped. Residents in the area have joined in the rescue mission.
It is, however, unclear if the trapped victims are still alive or dead.

Two out of the five victims who escaped unhurt are currently under investigation.
