Authorities at the Accra Girls Senior High School have allegedly refused to admit a student to the school because she had dreadlocks.

The father of the student [name withheld] said his daughter is a Rastafarian and it is therefore against their religion to cut off their locks.

He said he has explained the situation to school authorities but they have since denied his daughter.

The father believes that the school’s decision to deny his daughter admission is borne out of ignorance.

“I tried to see the headmistress. She was locked in her office. We want to see her to clarify things. We are Rastafarians as such our kids need to be educated just like every other region. I don’t see why she won’t be able to keep her locks …” he said.

He has since called on the government to intervene.

Meanwhile, the National Secretary of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Mr Samuel Gyebi Yeboah has urged head teachers at various Senior high Schools to offer students with dreadlocks admission.

He said parents whose wards are being denied admission should alert the Ghana Education Service.
