French prosecutors are reportedly investigating the decision by the IAAF to award the 2021 World Athletics Championships to Eugene.
The city in Oregon, United States was given the right to stage the event without a bidding process, although Gothenburg had expressed an interest.
IAAF president Sebastian Coe last month denied claims he lobbied for the 2021 World Championships to be staged in Eugene amid allegations of a conflict of interest.
Eugene is closely associated with sports manufacturer Nike, for whom Coe was an ambassador before he stepped down from that role in order to "focus unflinchingly" on his position at the IAAF.
French officials are already investigating former IAAF president Lamine Diack amid allegations of corruption, with the 82-year-old suspected of receiving money to defer charges against Russian doping cheats.
And the BBC reported on Wednesday that French prosecutors are now also looking into the decision by athletics' governing body to select Eugene as the venue for the World Championships in six years' time.
Coe, who was appointed as Diack's replacement in August, has vowed to fix athletics after doping scandals and claims of corruption rocked the IAAF.
