Celebrated Ghanaian musician, Akosua Agyepong has asked movie directors and producers to use the right people for the right roles.

In an interview with Abrantepa on Radio Univers’ mid-morning show, Brunch2Lunch on her expectations in the creative arts industry, the former member of the defunct music group Nakorex said it is not a good practise to let a young actor play the role of an elderly person because it would not project the industry.

“Our movie producers should go in for old actors and actresses to play the right roles. Sometimes, they fix wrong people in certain roles that do not befit them. And you hear producers say that the old charge exorbitant rates.  Some even paint their fellow actors black in order to kick them out of business. Meanwhile those they are craving for cannot play the roles very well. How can our movies go out there? That is not fair at all”, she noted.

Many actors and actresses who warmed the heart of movie enthusiasts with their acting skills have voiced their displeasure about movie directors and producers’ decision not to use them in movies again. They include Grace Omaboe (Maame Dokono), Grace Nortey and Agya Koo.

Actress Grace Nortey is on record to have said that, “Most of the scripts centre on the young guys and even in situations that they need old people for the role, they invite young people to play such roles. I just cannot understand why a young man would be disguised to play the role of an old man when there are old actors who can play such roles to perfection”.

Some of the young actors made to play the role of the old include Kojo Nkansah Liwin, Agya Koo [back in the days], and Mr. Beautiful. However, the movie directors and producers have argued that there is nothing wrong with the act. According to them, the kind of movie and what they hope to achieve inform their decision to choose who plays what in that movie.
