Her mother, Janine Byrom, 33, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, frantically called 999 after finding little Ella Byrom-Whitehead lying dead next to her sister, Lola.

Paramedics rushed to the scene, but the infant could not be saved.

Ella is believed to have died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as 'Cot Death', where babies 'switch off' in their sleep for unexplained reasons.

Mrs Byrom, 33, said Lola was struggling to cope with her twin sister's death.

'She was very unsettled in the first few days after her sister's passing,' she said.

'They used to comfort each other and they held hands in the cot. I used to dress them the same and I couldn't walk halfway down the road without someone stopping me to say they were adorable.'

Miss Byrom's fiancé Kieran Whitehead, 24, with whom she also has a two-year-old son, Harry, said he still couldn't believe that their seemingly healthy daughter had passed away in her sleep.

'It's the shock and not having the answers, that's the horrible thing about cot death.'
