A man suspected of killing and dismembering his six children and pregnant wife in the Volga city of Nizhny Novgorod has been detained in central Russia, a spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry's Vladimir region said.
The suspect, Oleg Belov, was wounded by police gunfire while resisting arrest and remained in stable condition Wednesday after a surgery, according to local health officials.
Kindergarten workers went to the police after “the children had stopped visiting preschool since July 25,” the Russian Prosecutor-Generals’s Office said in a statement.
Nobody was answering the door in their apartment in the city’s Nizhegorodsky district, and the police were forced to enter through the window.
The federal Investigative Committee said the dismembered remains of the children, all under the age of 6, were discovered Tuesday in the family's apartment in the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The body of his pregnant wife also was found in the apartment.
At a separate location, police found remains of a woman believed to be his mother.
Police arrested the suspect late Tuesday in the Vladimir region, where he was hiding in his mother-in-law's home. Police suspect he planned to kill her too.
