7 things you need to know about Meghan Markle

Megan Markle and Prince Harry are set to marry in the spring.

This isn’t from a “source”—Harry and Meghan posed for pictures outside Kensington Palace today and confirmed that they’re getting married in the spring.

BTW: They plan to live at Kensington Palace, which is also where Will and Kate live.

You’ve probably heard Meghan’s name thrown around a lot recently, but there’s plenty people don’t know about her. Here are a few things to get you up to speed to celebrate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement:

Meghan is used to being in the spotlight, considering that she is a star on USA's series Suits, about high-powered Manhattan lawyers. She's played Rachel Zane, a paralegal-turned-attorney, since the show began in 2011. Earlier in November, news broke that she would be leaving her role at the end of the show's seventh season, according to US Weekly.

Meghan is the global ambassador for World Vision Canada, and has traveled to various countries advocating for a variety of causes, including clean water and combatting period stigma. She wrote an essay on The Tig last year called “How To Be Both,” where she said she gets nervous around people who make change. “Put me in a room with Madeleine Albright or former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, and for once in my life, you’ll find this girl with the gift of gab, unequivocally without words,” she wrote.

Meghan recently stopped producing The Tig, which billed itself as a site for “those with a hunger for food, travel, fashion, and beauty.” The site encouraged people to do humanitarian work as well as be their best selves.

Meghan was married to producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013, according to Newsweek. Meghan landed her role on Suits soon after they married, and her hectic work schedule might have caused stress in their relationship, Newsweek says.

Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, is white and her mother, Doria Radlan, is black. Meghan says she's dealt with stigma about her family her whole life. In an essay for Elle U.K. in 2016, she wrote that she’s asked “what are you” nearly every day. “To describe something as being black and white means it is clearly defined. Yet when your ethnicity is black and white, the dichotomy is not that clear,” she wrote. “In fact, it creates a gray area. Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating.”

Her race also came up in November 2016 when Prince Harry said in a statement that she was being harassed by internet trolls.

Meghan did an interview with Vanity Fair in October, and her friend Serena Williams weighed in on her. “Her personality just shines," Serena said. Actress Priyanka Chopra is also a good buddy, according to Meghan’s Instagram page.

Meghan has left her role on Suits and is moving to London, but she wrote on The Tig that she never wanted to be “a lady who lunches.” “I’ve always wanted to be a woman who works. And this type of work is what feeds my soul, and fuels my purpose,” she wrote.
