Tertiary Education Gov't to review tax on private universities - Prof Yankah

According to Professor Yankah, the Minister in charge of Tertiary Education, the current tax on private universities had become a bane on these institutions, made them expensive and the cost are eventually passed on to innocent students.

The government has announced plans to review the current 25 percent tax on private universities.

The plans were announced by Professor Kwesi Yankah, the Minister in charge of Tertiary Education.

According to Professor Yankah, the current tax on private universities had become a bane on these institutions, made them expensive and the cost are eventually passed on to innocent students.

"In the interest of government that believes so much in the private sector, this cannot be rationalised. And I still believe that this was a mistake done by the previous government as it does not make any sense," he said in an interview with Joy News.

In the past, private universities have bitterly complained about how the taxes have been a bane on their operations. Aside taxes, the universities have complained about the government’s reluctance to grant them charters.

In addition, the minister said the government was working towards increasing the number of girls in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.
