Ghana is "very safe" from terrorists, Gov’t assures

The Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has assured that the country is safe from terrorist attacks.

According to Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, the government is committed to making sure that all Ghanaians are safe and have taken steps to prevent any possible terrorist attacks.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament last week, the Minister said Ghana is “very safe”, contrary to reports from certain quarters that security in the country is fragile.

He said government has devised a way to track information, insisting the state has information about everyone living in the country, as a precaution to counter any terrorist moves.

“This government is very cautious about the safety of the people of Ghana. We are very cautious and we are making sure the people of Ghana are completely safe. That’s the reason why Mr. Speaker, we are hesitant to take any decision that would have security implications on the people of Ghana,” Mr. Nitiwul said.

“That’s the reason why the Minister for Interior told this House that for security reasons there are certain information we can’t put on the floor here.”

“But Mr. Speaker, I can assure you that the people of Ghana are very safe—extremely very safe. When it comes to terrorism, when it comes to issues of people involve in terrorism, this government is tracking and has every information about everybody.”

Earlier this month, the Police at Odorkor, a suburb of Accra, arrested three persons in possession of a cache of explosives.

Reports suggest that one of the suspects is linked with dreaded terrorist groups Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

However, the Defense Minister said there is no need to press the panic bottom yet, assuring that government has taken steps to ensure the country is free from terrorists.
