An energy expert, Ishmael Agyekumhene has admonished government to come out with more innovative ways to raise revenue.

Mr. Agyekumhene said government should shy away from the 'lazy" approach of revenue mobilisation which is the overtaxing of petroleum products.

Speaking on 3FM's morning show "Sunrise Daily", he said: "Petroleum taxes are a very lazy way of government getting money. They only compute how many volumes of fuel have been sold and slap the taxes on them".

He contends that with the numerous projects the government wants to undertake, it will be prudent if they can come up with different ways to generate revenue order than putting taxes on petrol.

Agyekumhene also called on the NPP government to come clean on the state of nation's finances.

He said, "One of the things that I am not sure this administration is telling us is how dire our finances are. We have not been able to mobilize enough revenue in the first year to be able to say we are letting go of some of the things that were introduced for a specific purpose."

The energy expert was speaking to the news that government intends to scrap 2 percent off the Petroleum Tax. A move they think will help lower the prices of petrol which have been increasing steadily over the past months.
