Mahama’s people lied to him – Andy Kankam

After the NDC was defeated in the 2016 election, the tension in the party has been growing with many of the party supporters accusing some of their leaders of misappropriation of funds.

He said most of these individuals did not allow people to offer constructive criticisms while the president was in office. He argued that this gave former president Mahama the impression that he was doing everything right to get him re-elected in the 2016 election.

A recent newspaper publication suggested that the former President, John Mahama, has threatened to publish the names of people who received various sums of money from him for campaign activities.

But speaking Kankam told Accra-based Citi FM that “I see this as very unhealthy for the image of the former president [John Mahama] and his wife [Lordina Mahama] if what the paper has published is true.”

He suggested that the former president must channel any grievance to the Kwesi Botchwey-led committee.

“If the former president has any issue, as a leader, I think that he should have channelled this to the committee,” Andy Kankam said.

He said the NDC wouldn’t have been in this situation if they allowed for the then President John Mahama to hear the actual truth.

“If the president was allowed to be told the truth about the realities on the ground, this thing wouldn’t have happened. He would have continued to be the president of Ghana. But some people around him would not tell him the truth,” he said.

Meanwhile, Andy Kankam was certain the opposition NDC can only stage a comeback in the 2020 elections if it puts an end to the hypocrisy and addresses the challenges of the party.

“Unless he [Mahama] is not prepared to come in 2020. If NDC will bounce back in 2020, this is the time we must let him [Mahama] know that this praise singing, this hypocrisy and when you are telling the truth, people run to him [Mahama] and tell him you don’t like him… you see what has happened? He [Mahama] is now naked… This is the time the NDC must allow people to offer constructive critics.”
