We’re 'hypocrites' for criticizing Sunyani Chief - Ofosu Ampofo

According to Ofosu Ampofo who also doubles as the NDC’s Director of Elections, hypocrisy is being exhibited at its highest level.

The Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has accused Ghanaians of being hypocritical in their criticisms of the Sunyani Chief’s election promise to the President.

He argued that such statements are a regular adding that, “generally saying that myself and my traditional area will throw our weight behind you is no news…When the chief says that, does that translate into votes?”

The debate over whether or not chiefs must be allowed to participate in active partisan politics has been revived following a declaration made by two chiefs who promised President John Mahama some percentage of votes in their respective regions come 2016.

The Chief of Sunyani, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri promised to help President Mahama to secure at least 80% of the total votes in the Brong Ahafo Region. Days earlier, the chief of Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region was also reported to have assured the President 50% of the total votes in the region.

But according to Ofosu Ampofo who also doubles as the NDC’s Director of Elections, hypocrisy is being exhibited at its highest level.

He said such statements are not only made to sitting Presidents but also, opposition leaders.

Ofosu Ampofo claimed that "just this evening, somebody called me from the Western Region and indicated that Nana Akufo-Addo was in the Shama traditional area and a chief there said that you are the one who can build this country and move this country forward so myself and my traditional area will throw our weight behind you.”

“Even though he is in opposition, the chief is alleged to have made this open statement so sometimes, my worry is that there is also some form of hypocrisy in our system because when it happens to one party, nothing is said about it but when it goes to another, we have everyone moving helter skelter, going to interview people in the traditional area and making mountains out of molehills,” he complained.

The NDC Vice Chairman further questioned the sense of objectivity being displayed by the general public and the media over the matter.

He wondered why “when somebody goes to say something in support of NDC, hell breaks loose but let another person say it in favour of NPP, everyone keeps quiet.”

“The same kind of hypocrisy is also sometimes exhibited in the media and I think that one must also be checked,” he stressed.
