The government has announced an increase in the monthly allowances give to chiefs and queen mothers in the country.
Gov't increases monthly allowance of chiefs to GH₵1000, queens to get GH₵500
In the past, chiefs received 800 cedis while queen mothers received 500 cedis as monthly allowances from the government.

Chiefs would now receive a monthly allowance of 1000 cedis (previously 800 cedis) while queen mothers would now receive 500 cedis (previously 350 cedis).
The announcement was made by the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Kofi Dzamesi. He made the announcement while meeting members of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs in Tamale.
"He stated that the increment, which has already taken effect, was based on a condition that chieftaincy conflicts would be reduced. Mr Dzamesi expressed concern about the number of chieftaincy cases in the country and called on the various Regional Houses of Chiefs and the National House of Chiefs to help resolve them to speed up development", the Graphic Online reports.
Although they wield no constitutional powers, traditional leaders are highly revered by the people and as such have a huge influence in the society.
