Bawumia gives reason behind stadium renaming

Current Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia explains why stadium in Tamale is being named after the Late ex vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama

His Excellency Dr Bawumia was speaking at the edifice when he was commissioning the stadium on Sunday, December 10, 2017.

The Late Ex-Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama was served as board member for northern based club Real Tamale United where a host of players including three time African best player Abedi Ayew Pele were produced.

His Excellency Dr Bawumia acknowledged that making him a true sports icon in Ghana

“He was immensely influential in lifting Abedi Pele and many sports men alongside women from obscurity into the lime light. Alhaji Mahama is indeed a national hero and sports icon”. His achievements transcends through space and time. His name is therefore immortalized.”

Ahlaji Aliu Mahama was the Vice President of Ghana when the Tamale Stadium was being built and it is an open secret that his influence counted for the new stadium being built in Tamale.

His Excellency Bawumia laid emphasis on that and attributed that pattern of events as part of the reason the stadium was renamed after him.

"After all he was instrumental in the building of the Tamale Sports Stadium it is only fair and just that President Nana Akuffo-Addo names the stadium after him.”

The late Alhaji Aliu Mahama served as a Vice president from January 2001 to January 2007.
