The five-time African champions have announced the promotion of assistant coach Mohammed Salah to the top position, replacing his boss Moamen Soliman, who had been in charge since August.

"Soliman's resignation has been accepted, assistant Mohamed Salah will replace him,» the club's controversial chairman Mortada Mansour confirmed.

Soliman, an Egyptian Cup winner, saw the White Knights through a 1-0 league win over Tanta last Friday, but Mansour vilified him for overseeing a «poor display", leading to his resignation.

After the club's 3-1 aggregate loss to South African club Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League final last month, Mansour had ironically pledged not to sack Soliman. «We have a good technical staff and I'm not going to sack them,» Mansour had said. «Moamen will stay till the end of this season with Zamalek."

The 42-year-old Soliman joins a long list of coaches to have left the Cairo-based club in 2016: Marcus Paquetá, Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam, Alex McLeish and Mohamed Helmy.

Zamalek are currently 6th in the Egyptian top flight.
