Gender activists being 'hypocritical' - Ursula Owusu

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central had recently on a campaign platform accused Mrs. Charlotte Osei of trading her body for her position.

MP for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu Ekuful has chastised some gender activists over their handling of the Electoral Commission sex-for-job claims by Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong.

According to her, the 'so-called' gender activists are being hypocritical about the matter considering their apparent silence when she was attacked by unknown persons at Odododiodio in the Greater-Accra region in 2012.

Her comments come on the back of a statement by MP for Tano South, Hannah Louisa Bissiw that the Assin Central MP should be sanctioned for his comments.

But in an interview with Accra-based Adom FM, Ursula Owusu Ekuful said the Tano South MP has no moral authority to lead the campaign against Ken Agyapong after calling her a prostitute in 2015.

She argued that the campaign by the gender advocates led by some Majority female MPs smack of 'hypocrisy and double standards'.

The comments did not go down well with some sections of the public, including many civil society organisations and women groups.

The Minister of Gender Children and Social Protection subsequently requested an apology from Mr. Kennedy Agyepong on behalf of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has also condemned Assin North Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong, for comments the Association says are “distasteful, offensive, abusive and derogatory not only to Mrs Osei but to women in general.”

Gender group, the Coalition of Concerned Women, Ghana, on Tuesday demonstrated through the principal streets of Accra to condemn the statement by the Assin Central MP.
