Staff turn school library to dining room

Many rural schools in Ghana do not have the proper and sufficient equipment, and the Achinakrom Municipal Assembly Primary school in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region is one of such schools.

As the saying goes, "knowledge is power" – which is commonly attributed to Sir Francis Bacon – every child should have the chance to learn school and professional skills and should be trained to educate themselves to be able to gain the power to achieve their aims and to build up their own existences.

This is based on the prerequisite that he or she can go to school and receive an appropriate education, though the facility and motivated teachers alone are not enough.

It is worrying to note that a structure in the school allocated for a library facility now serves as a store room and a place for eating, Kumasi-based Luv FM reports.

The headmaster of the school, Francis Samuel Kattah, complained that rooms and teaching materials such as books and computers are not enough.

Class Three teacher, Christopher Agyei Antwi, is disturbed about the situation, noting that it impacts negatively on teaching and learning.

Good quality education, according to the Sustainable Development Goals, must hinge on literacy and numeracy.

Yet under these bad conditions, the objective that by 2030, all youth and a substantial proportion of adults, both men and women achieve literacy and numeracy can hardly be reached.

Many children either read badly or cannot read at all because schools lack basic infrastructure and materials for effective teaching and learning.

Infrastructure deficit in basic schools remains a challenge that calls for attention from government and stakeholders.
