Dee Gordon has signed a five-year contract extension with the Miami Marlins.

The All-Star second baseman has put pen to paper on a deal that is believed to be worth $50million, and is said to include a $14m option for a sixth year.

Gordon was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a seven-player trade in December 2014 and surpassed expectations in his first season in south Florida.

"I'm thrilled to be affirming our long-term commitment to Dee Gordon, not only one of the most dynamic players in baseball, but also an outstanding young man," Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said in a statement.

"It's truly incredible and historic what he did in his first season with our club. He adds great energy and camaraderie in the clubhouse, but what's more, he's an exceptional person off the field."

The speedy 27-year-old posted a batting average of .333 that earned him the National League batting title and an on-base percentage of .359. He also recorded 58 stolen bases.
