The Kenyan facing deportation from Canada over drugs

A Kenyan citizen faces deportation from Canada for his involvement in drug peddling when he is sentenced by at the Yellowknife Supreme Court on Thursday.

Yohannes Seyoume, a 21 year old Kenyan of Somali heritage was arrested as part of the operation that brought down renowned drug lord Todd Dube in 2016.

Dube was sentenced to one of the territory's longest prison sentences for drug trafficking in October. On Monday, the sentencing hearing began for Yohannes Seyoume of Edmonton.

Seyoume pleaded guilty in November to trafficking cocaine in Yellowknife. An earlier charge of conspiracy to commit trafficking was withdrawn.

Seyoume was born in Somalia, but he grew up in Kenya before coming to Canada at the age of seven, Harte told the court. He pointed to a section of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act on "serious criminality" to support his statement, following the hearing.

According to the prosecution Seyoume was making $12,000 dollars a week in profit from his drug business as part of a three man sales team for Dube.

According to his lawyer, Seyoume will be deported if his sentence is longer than six months.
