Today, what you call discipline, the law might call abuse. So if you’re a parent, teacher, guardian—or even a nosy uncle—it’s important to know how to correct a child without ending up on the wrong side of the law. Let’s break it all down in plain terms.

Not exactly ,there are limits. You can’t hit, injure, or mistreat children, even if they’re your own. Ghanaian law protects children from abuse and inhumane treatment, and you could face serious consequences if you violate those protections.

<blockquote>No person shall subject a child to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment including any cultural practice which dehumanises or is injurious to the physical and mental well-being of a child.</blockquote>

Translation: You can’t beat, insult, lock up, or force a child to kneel in the hot sun and call it “training.” That’s abuse—and it’s against the law.

<h3>What Act 732 (Domestic Violence Act) Adds</h3>

This law takes things a step further. Section 1 of the Domestic Violence Act, 2007 (Act 732) says:

<blockquote>Domestic violence includes any act or threat of physical, sexual, economic or emotional abuse that harms or is likely to harm the safety, health or well-being of a person.</blockquote>

That includes children. So even slaps, insults, or punishments that humiliate them could land you in hot water.

Their methods included impersonating company executives to mislead employees into wiring large sums of money, and emotionally manipulating individuals—mainly elderly Americans—into sending funds under false pretences.

The syndicate is believed to have defrauded at least one business and eight individuals of over $100 million. The suspects remain in custody pending extradition. A fourth member of the group is still at large.

<h3>A Broader Pattern of Cybercrime</h3>

Over the last few years, several other Ghanaians have faced prosecution for <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/lifestyle/9-steps-to-take-if-fraudsters-steal-your-momo-2025041510152463800">cyberfraud schemes </a>across various U.S. jurisdictions.

In May 2025, Ghanaian businessman <a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/entertainment/how-accra-socialite-dada-joe-remix-was-arrested-exclusive-details-emerge-2025052911060342306">Joseph Badu Boateng, known as Dada Joe Remix</a>, was extradited to face charges in Arizona. He allegedly led a romance and inheritance scam from 2013 to 2023, tricking elderly victims into believing they were entitled to gold and jewels, which could only be claimed after paying fabricated fees.

<a target="_self" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/entertainment/celebrities/who-is-luvman-allison-hajia-4realls-baby-daddy-behind-her-dollar2m-scam-saga-2024072419413579652">Mona Faiz Montrage, popularly known as Hajia 4Reall,</a> was sentenced in June 2024 to one year and one day in U.S. federal prison for her role in a $2 million romance scam. She reportedly received $89,000 from a victim under the guise of supporting her father's farm. She completed her sentence on May 22, 2025, and is expected to return to Ghana.

Another Ghanaian, Emmanuel Quamey, was sentenced in 2024 to four years in prison for laundering over $3.3 million from online scams targeting elderly victims.

<h3>Ghanaian Names in Global Crackdowns</h3>

Authorities in the United States have continued to uncover cybercrime rings involving Ghanaians or operating from Ghana. In June 2025, U.S. officials in Ohio indicted suspects including Dwayne Asafo Adjei, Nancy Adom, and Eric Aidoo for romance and investment scams.

In North Carolina, Clinton Ogedegbe faces charges for laundering proceeds from fraud schemes. Similar indictments have come out of Massachusetts and Connecticut, where suspects were accused of scamming Americans through dating apps and professional platforms like LinkedIn.

U.S. prosecutors have even filed a civil forfeiture claim to seize over $679,000 worth of Tether cryptocurrency believed to have been obtained through scams with ties to Ghana.

<h3>Victims Left Devastated</h3>

Behind the staggering financial losses are the emotional and psychological tolls on victims. Many were elderly, isolated individuals who genuinely believed they had found love or viable investment opportunities.

One man reportedly lost over $700,000 while trying to help his supposed Ghanaian partner retrieve gold bars from customs. Another woman sent tens of thousands of dollars believing she was supporting a farm project in Ghana.

The glamorisation of "fast money" in certain corners of Ghanaian pop culture has also normalised digital fraud as a viable hustle. Though such motivations don’t excuse the crimes, they offer insight into why cybercrime is gaining traction.

<h3>How This Affects Innocent Ghanaians</h3>

The actions of a few are affecting the freedoms and opportunities of millions. For Ghanaians living abroad, the stigma of fraud is leading to increased profiling and scrutiny in professional and financial environments.

Those applying for visas face longer processing times and more documentation requirements. Freelancers and businesses are also seeing their proposals ignored or financial transfers delayed due to reputational risks linked to Ghana.

And for the small health centre that serves this town, those laws are more than cultural relics; they are daily operational challenges.<h2>Health Centre Overstretched by Tradition</h2>The Mafi Dove Health Centre, initially built as a basic CHPS compound, now functions more like a mini-hospital, stretched far beyond its original purpose. This transformation wasn’t by design, but by necessity—driven by one of the community’s most enduring taboos: no childbirth on Dove soil.As soon as a pregnant woman shows signs of labour, she must leave the community immediately. Whether she is in pain or not, she is considered persona non grata until she delivers and her baby’s umbilical cord falls off. Only then can she return home.This taboo forces a steady flow of pregnant women and new mothers to the health centre on the town’s outskirts. But the facility, with just four beds and a few midwives, is buckling under the weight.

“Sometimes women have to sleep on the floor with their babies,” said Emmanuel Egu, the physician assistant in charge. “We’re operating like a hospital, but we don’t have the space, staff, or equipment.”Mothers who deliver at other hospitals also seek refuge here because tradition forbids them from returning home too soon. Caesarean patients, exhausted and healing, end up sheltering in a centre never meant to host anyone overnight.<h2>A Need for a Maternity Wing</h2>To address the growing demand, Egu suggests the construction of a dedicated maternity wing—a space designed specifically for postnatal care where women and their babies can stay until they are welcomed back into the community.“A maternity shelter would reduce the pressure and improve care. The midwives could dress the umbilical cords daily, helping them fall off faster,” he explained.

He also advocates for expanding the main health centre and hiring more midwives, pointing out that patient privacy is almost impossible under the current setup.<h2>Why Mothers Can't Deliver in Dove</h2>The pressure on the health centre only makes sense when one understands the taboos of Dove—longstanding spiritual laws said to have been passed down by divine instruction.According to local elders Kwame Tsiditse Gbenua and Charles Gbenua, the community was founded by a hunter named Akiti, who migrated from Notsie in present-day Togo. After crossing the river Kebe, he settled in Dove. There, legend says, a voice from above gave him a warning: he could only live on that land if he followed three sacred laws.<h2>The Three Core Taboos of Dove</h2><h3>1. No Childbirth on Dove Soil</h3>The most well-known of the taboos. Pregnant women are strictly forbidden from giving birth in the community. The risk of blood "polluting" the sacred land is too great, according to traditional belief. Women must leave the community to deliver—and cannot return until the baby’s umbilical cord falls off.Interestingly, menstruation is permitted. Though also involving blood, it is not considered a spiritual threat like childbirth is.<h3>2. No Animal Rearing</h3>There are no goats, chickens, or sheep roaming Dove’s streets. Residents can bring animals into the town—but only males, and they must be slaughtered the same day. This rule, too, ties back to the fear of female animals giving birth and staining the land.Despite the ban, meat is consumed regularly in Dove. It’s just not raised there.<h3>3. No Burials in Town</h3>When someone dies in Dove, their body must be taken outside the community for burial. There is no cemetery within Dove’s borders. This taboo stems from the same principle of preserving the sanctity of the land. Death and blood are both considered spiritually corrosive.“When human blood stains the ground, it invites evil,” say the elders. These beliefs, they insist, have protected Dove from conflict and misfortune for generations.<h2>A Community Trying to Keep Up</h2>The influence of these taboos has turned a modest health facility into a regional maternity centre—but with none of the resources such a role demands.Cramped rooms serve multiple functions. Family planning conversations often take place within earshot of others. Some women avoid the facility entirely because of the lack of privacy.Beyond maternal health, sanitation is another issue. Dove has no public toilet, and many homes lack private ones. Residents often defecate in the nearby bush, contributing to the spread of diseases like diarrhoea and dysentery.“We see too many cases of preventable illnesses,” said Egu. “Toilets could change that.”<h2>A Lab with Limited Tools</h2>The health centre’s laboratory is also poorly equipped. Owusu Acheampong Kweku, the medical lab scientist, says even basic tests like full blood counts can’t be performed because there’s no analyser.

“I sometimes have to improvise using a microscope,” he said. “It’s not the best, but I try to support the physician assistant as much as possible.”He’s calling on the government, NGOs, and private donors to visit the facility and see the needs for themselves.

<h2>Appeals Ignored by Authorities</h2>Despite their best efforts, Mafi Dove’s leaders say they’ve received little to no support from government institutions. According to Amos Alorse, the town development planning secretary and Unit Committee Chairman of the Mafi Dove electoral area, they have made several appeals to the district assembly and central government, but these calls have largely fallen on deaf ears.

They’ve guided the community for centuries and shaped its social fabric. If you have ever travelled along the Accra–Aflao road, then you must have spotted a cluster of beautifully decorated clay pots on display by the roadside—beginning from a town called Vume, where they are made, through Tefle, where one of former President Rawlings’ houses is located, to Sokpoe in the lower Volta Basin.Guess how long some of these pots have been on display! The owner of Peace and Unity Pottery and Ceramics, the company that produces these clay pots, has revealed that some of them have been displayed there for between ten and fifteen years.That’s intriguing, isn’t it? But please, don’t get it twisted. This surprising revelation does not in any way mean that the pottery business in Vume is dormant. In fact, Stephen Kwashie Bonny has been involved in this work for the past eighteen years, and if it were not profitable, he would have shut down the factory long ago.He stated that he is truly earning a living from the pottery business and enjoys it immensely. As a matter of fact, he is currently expanding the factory by constructing a new site, and all the pots you see at the aforementioned locations belong to him.

“When we started this business about eighteen years ago, sales were very good because we are located along an international road. We used to export the pots to Togo, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso, aside from distributing them to other parts of Ghana, mostly Accra,” Kwashie Bonny said. “Sometimes we gave them to people on credit, and they paid us after an agreed period of time. But currently, sales are down because it is the dry season. Business thrives in the rainy season, as that is when people plant more flowers.”This is the trade he has practised for close to two decades—through which he has been able to provide for his family, including buying a car, building his own home, and educating his children, some of whom are now abroad.He was emphatic in stating that anyone who forms a negative opinion about his business simply because the pots are always seen on display along the Accra–Aflao road would be mistaken. Kwashie Bonny explained that the market is constantly replenished: as soon as someone buys a pot, the space is filled with a new one. Some people place bespoke orders that are crafted specifically for them and therefore do not appear on display.

<h3>Wife’s Unflinching Support</h3>As the saying goes, beside every successful man is a woman. Stephen Kwashie Bonny has not been in this pottery business alone—he has enjoyed the unwavering support of his indefatigable wife, who has vowed never to pursue any other occupation, having discovered the joy and financial rewards that come with pottery.Agnes Bonny said her husband had set up a large store for her, but upon realising that the pottery business offered her more than her personal venture, she abandoned it to partner with him—and has never regretted the decision.“This work is a good one, but people don’t understand. Initially, when we started, people mocked us,” she said. “But I was the one selling the pots, and I knew the benefits, so I was determined to learn the pottery craft. My husband established a store for me, but I gave it up for this business.”“It is lucrative, because this is the work we have done for years through which we have educated all our children. Some are teachers, others are abroad—but they all know how to make pots.”

Agnes joined her husband in appealing to the Government of Ghana to consider investing in the pottery industry as part of its industrialisation drive, in order to create jobs for the many unemployed youth in the area.“The youth who are loitering about should take an interest in learning this trade. It is good for young ladies—it enables them to earn a living and contribute meaningfully to the nation.”<h3>Employment Potential</h3>Over the years, successive governments have failed to implement policies that offer sufficient employment opportunities for the growing population—worsening the unemployment crisis in the country.As of 2017, more than 1.2 million Ghanaians aged 15 and above were estimated to be unemployed, representing 11.9% of Ghana’s total population.According to the Labour Force Survey Report by the Ghana Statistical Service, of that number, 714,916 were female (57.2%) and 535,997 were male (42.8%).The aim of the Labour Force Survey was to collect basic data on employment trends in Ghana and provide statistics to inform decision-making to improve the job market.While these and other statistics are readily available, successive governments have shown little commitment to utilising them in policy formulation aimed at addressing unemployment.Peace and Unity Pottery and Ceramics has, at present, provided gainful employment to at least fifteen individuals in the area—excluding apprentices and interns.Stephen Bonny said even more locals could be employed at his factory if he were supported to expand and diversify production using clay.

Felix Morkar, one of the painters who enhances the pots’ appearance, said he has been doing the job for the past ten years. He explained that their painting technique is far more specialised than regular painting.“Of course it is lucrative. When I completed Junior High School, I didn’t continue, and this is the work I’ve done for years to support my younger siblings in school and take care of my personal needs. It’s a very nice job, but it’s difficult to learn—especially mastering how to mix colours,” Morkar said.<h3>Evolution and Usefulness of Clay Pots</h3>As the world evolves, various innovations have rendered traditional items like clay pots increasingly obsolete. Plastic and metal products have largely replaced clay pots for domestic purposes—except for flower planting.People now tend to opt for plastic and metal items under the impression that they are more durable or aesthetically pleasing.Nevertheless, like all things, clay pots have their drawbacks, but research suggests their advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

According to a study published on Quora.com by Rachna Jain Khanal, an engineer and quality control officer at Siddhartha Pellet Feed Pvt Ltd, clay pots:<ol><li>Circulate steam throughout cooking, allowing for more moisture and enabling cooking with less oil and fat.</li><li>Being alkaline, clay neutralises the pH of food, acting as a natural detoxifier.
