Specifically, diesel prices can aid in the development of several African economies by reducing the cost of running a variety of industries, including the transportation, industrial, and agricultural sectors.

For a large number of African nations, especially those that have difficulty developing a conventional energy infrastructure, diesel fuel is an essential source of energy.

If the economy is largely dependent on diesel and there are few alternatives to diesel-powered engines, then the high cost of diesel could cause financial difficulties. But when these problems are resolved, there is some financial relief.

With that said, here are the 10 African countries with the lowest cost of diesel according to <a href="https://www.globalpetrolprices.com/diesel_prices/">GlobalPetrolPrices.</a> The list was last updated on the 22nd of July, 2024, when the average price of diesel globally was 1.25 U.S. Dollars per liter.

Liberia is the only country on the list with a diesel price higher than 1 USD. Diesel prices for Angola, Tunisia, Gabon, and Ghana increased <a href="https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/markets/top-10-african-countries-with-the-lowest-cost-of-diesel/qfq27wp">from last month,</a> while the prices for Nigeria and Liberia reduced. The Diesel price for every other country remained the same.

The rise in diesel costs affects a variety of businesses, including transportation, agriculture, and the total cost of living.

Hunger dramatically reduces productivity by impairing people's capacity to work productively. Poor nutrition diminishes physical strength and mental clarity, hence limiting economic production.

However, worse than that is the effect of hunger on individual lives.

It goes without saying that hunger poses a direct danger to human health by weakening immune systems and making people more susceptible to illness.

Malnutrition, especially in children, causes stunting, wasting, and other serious health repercussions that could last into adulthood.

This in turn can lead to an overburdened healthcare system, particularly in some African countries that may be ill-equipped to handle such a financial responsibility.

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, which seeks to eliminate hunger, ensure food security, enhance nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture, emphasizes the need of solving this issue.

As seen in the most recent <a data-link-role-code="open_new_tab" href="https://mo.ibrahim.foundation/sites/default/files/2024-06/2024-forum-report.pdf">Financing Africa report,</a> by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, there is no African country that has achieved this goal, as most are far below realization.

With that said, here are the 10 African countries with the most hunger, as per their SDG 2 index score.

The lower the score, the higher the hunger level, as they indicate what level hunger has been combated.

Many African countries have strict laws against same-sex unions. These laws frequently carry harsh punishments, including lengthy jail terms and, in some circumstances, the death penalty. Anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is aggressively implemented in countries such as Nigeria and Uganda.

Beyond legal obstacles, deeply held cultural and religious beliefs contribute to prejudice against LGBTQ+ people. Many African communities are conservative, having conventional views on gender and sexuality. Homosexuality is frequently regarded as a taboo, an offense to cultural and moral standards. In many areas, LGBTQ+ persons endure social exclusion, harassment, and violence.

International pressure and assistance can also influence tolerance. Global human rights groups and foreign governments often speak against&nbsp;anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and campaign for the protection of LGBTQ+ rights throughout Africa, as was the case with Uganda’s new anti-gay laws.

Despite this, homosexuality is still widely frowned upon in most African countries and can lead to severe legal punishments.

A report by <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-43822234">BBC</a> revealed that 64 countries have laws that criminalize homosexuality, and nearly half of these are in Africa.

“Some countries, including several in Africa, have recently moved to decriminalize same-sex unions and improve rights for LGBTQ people. But there are countries where existing laws outlawing homosexuality have been tightened, including Nigeria and Uganda,” the report reads.

With that said here are the 10 African countries with the longest max prison sentences for homosexuality, according to the <a href="https://database.ilga.org/criminalisation-consensual-same-sex-sexual-acts">ILGA database.</a> According to the database, of Africa's 54 countries, 30 criminalize consensual same-sex sexual acts, and in some areas, the death penalty still exists.

The scrutiny and discrimination of the LGBTQ+ community in Africa is one of the most glaring in the world.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an intergovernmental body that was established to address challenges to the integrity of the global financial system, including money laundering and the funding of terrorism.

A nation that has committed to resolving strategic shortcomings in its anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CTF) regimes is signaled by being put on the FATF grey list.

However, the economics, governance, and foreign relations of a country are all significantly impacted by its placement on the grey list.

Nonetheless, the FATF's grey list serves as a stimulus for institutional and governance change. Countries on the grey list must take thorough actions to fix recognized flaws in their AML and CTF systems. This frequently entails legislative reforms, strengthened regulatory frameworks, and improved enforcement procedures.

“When the FATF places a jurisdiction under increased monitoring, it means the country has committed to resolving swiftly the identified strategic deficiencies within agreed timeframes and is subject to increased monitoring. This list is often externally referred to as the “grey list,” the <a href="https://www.fatf-gafi.org/en/publications/High-risk-and-other-monitored-jurisdictions/increased-monitoring-june-2024.html">FATF</a> states.

The FATF regularly evaluates its criteria for placing a nation on its Grey or Black List, and if a country has resolved those issues, it is removed from the list. For example, Jamaica recently achieved great progress in reforming its AML/CFT system, and as a result, it has been listed as a country no longer subject to increased monitoring.

Unfortunately, since the last time the FATF released its Grey List, no African country placed on the list has been removed.

According to the fourth annu<a href="https://sapienlabs.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/4th-Annual-Mental-State-of-the-World-Report.pdf">al Mental State of the World Report </a>by<a href="https://sapienlabs.org/whats_new/sapien-labs-releases-the-4th-annual-mental-state-of-the-world-report/"> Sapien Labs,</a> titled “A Perspective on Internet-Enabled Populations,” which was published in March 2024, Mental well-being globally in 2023 remained at its post-pandemic low with no sign of getting back to its pre-pandemic levels.

<h3>Interesting mental health findings </h3>

The survey conducted by Sapien Labs revealed that Those over 65 showed stable mental wellness during the COVID-19 epidemic, whereas younger generations, especially those under 35, had the sharpest decreases.

Another interesting finding from the research showed that African and Latin American countries topped the list while countries from Europe ranked the lowest. This proved that wealth does not necessarily equate to better mental well-being.

It is important to note that the research is based on an online anonymous survey called the MHQ assessment, "a comprehensive online survey of cognitive and emotional capabilities that provides an overall mental wellbeing metric." This denotes that the respondents represent the data of those who are digitally savvy, and not necessarily the entire population of the world.

As a result, using data from 27,969 respondents, Sapien Labs discovered that the younger a generation of today's 18–24-year-olds was when they received their first smartphone, the worse their adult mental health outcomes would be.

Additionally, the survey found that those who consume ultra-processed foods are more likely to have poorer mental wellbeing. This data set cuts across all ages.

“A third factor discussed in our report last year is diminished family bonds. For example, across a sample of 407,959 respondents, we found that 10% of 18-24-year-olds did not get along with any of their family and preferred not to see them compared to only 3% of the oldest generation. At the same time, the risk of mental health challenges in adulthood is four times lower if you have close family relationships,” the report reads

For the 2023 rankings, Sapien Labs gathered data from over 500,000 respondents in 13 languages across 71 nations and 9 regions. The MHQ assessment, a comprehensive online survey of cognitive and emotional capabilities, was used to collect data.

It provides an overall mental well-being metric (the MHQ score) as well as multiple-dimensional views related to coping with life's stresses and functioning productively.

According to the report, “six-dimensional scores of Mood &amp; Outlook, Social Self, Drive &amp; Motivation, Adaptability &amp; Resilience, Cognition, and Mind-Body Connection are also computed using subsets of the 47 assessed items to provide a more granular view. The scores are reported on a scale that is divided into positive and negative components.&nbsp;

The positive range of the scale represents the spectrum of normal functioning and is a 200-point scale calibrated to a mean of 100 based on pre-pandemic responses in 2019, similar to the IQ scale. The negative range of the scale represents mental well-being scores associated with a negative impact on the ability to function and is associated with clinical-level risks and challenges.”

However, a report by the WHO on tobacco use globally, titled<a href="https://iris.who.int/bitstream/handle/10665/375711/9789240088283-eng.pdf?sequence=1"> “WHO Global Report on Trends in Prevalence of Tobacco Use 2000–2030,”</a> its latest iteration of the report shows that 150 countries are successfully reducing tobacco use.

“Good progress has been made in tobacco control in recent years, but there is no time for complacency. I’m astounded at the depths the tobacco industry will go to pursue profits at the expense of countless lives. We see that the minute a government thinks they have won the fight against tobacco the tobacco industry seizes the opportunity to manipulate health policies and sell their deadly products," says Dr Ruediger Krech, Director of the WHO Department of Health Promotion.
