During the recent meet the press encounter organized by the government, a question was asked by Abdul Manan, a journalist from Marhaba FM, an Accra based FM station on the implemented projects so far by the Ministry for Inner City and Zongo Development. The minister answered among other things that, through the initiative of his ministry, the pelele stream has been fully drained and thus floods have hitherto been prevented in the area.

The current state of the pelele stream paints a gloomy picture and the probability of the area experiencing floods during the raining season looms. Looking at the current state of the stream, one will wonder why the minister will create the impression the problem has been solved. Indeed, more needs to be done to arrest the situation.

Sometime April this year, the government undertook some minor desilting work in the drains, this was very shallow and does not amount to thorough dredging of the drains capable of curtailing the perennial floods that have bedevilled residents around the pelele stream. Thorough civil works need to be carried out if we are to succeed at preventing floods in the area. Probably, there is a need to relook at the whole system design of the pelele bridge among others.

The pelele stream runs through Dichemso, Aboabo, Anloga Junction and Antonsu, residents around the stream live in fear anytime it rains. In 2015, five lives were lost due to floods along the stream. Most residents are displaced, and properties lost whenever there is heavy downpour in the area. The stream has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes posing serious health threats.
