Reasons why people choose diploma over degree courses

In many cases, a diploma is the best answer: it comes at a fraction of the cost, time and effort, and often better sets you up for your new career.

Whether you are fresh student or deciding to take a new path, it can be a little daunting trying to figure out where to head with your education.

Naturally, you want to get the most out of any education efforts so that you can enter the workforce headstrong, job-ready and capable. In an ever-changing and competitive job market, vocational education can in many cases make you more able to accomplish your goals effectively than a degree will.

Here are five reasons people are opting for diplomas over degrees:

1. Diplomas make you job ready

Many university degrees will focus on theory-based knowledge. Vocational education gives you the opportunity to understand the skills you need while allowing you to put these skills into practice. This will enable you to jump straight into the workforce with all the necessary knowledge and capabilities.

2. Diplomas can be completed in significantly less time

University degrees require a minimum three years of full time study, while diplomas need only two years at the very most. Most diplomas can be completed within a year. The amount of time you spend in schooling will be lessened, allowing you to enter the workforce and reap the benefits sooner.

3. Diplomas come at a fraction of the cost

Undergraduate degrees can cost upwards of GHC 60,000 in course fee alone, whereas diplomas can cost less than half of that price. In addition, just like university degrees, the government offers fee help schemes for people who undertake courses for a diploma.

4. Learning is flexible

Most vocational education courses can be started at any time of the year because unlike degrees, they don’t necessarily have to follow a higher education calendar. Many can also be taken online. In addition, it is possible for you to finish a diploma part-time while you work.

5.  Diplomas often have less rigid pre-requisites

Especially when you’re younger, universities do look for specific scores for acceptance into their courses. Vocational courses are less reliant on these scores, giving you a better chance of being accepted into the course of your choice.
