"NPP ‘Agenda 2020’ is repugnant" – Dr Aggery Darko

According to Dr Aggery Darko, whether the national executives would be re-elected or not is dependent on the role they played towards the victory or otherwise of the party in the 2016 elections.

A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko has said that he cannot fathom why some New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives and members would rather wish for the party to win power in 2020 than 2016.

His comments came amidst allegations that some national executives of the opposition party have sworn to do everything possible to see to it that the party’s flag-bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo is defeated in the 2016 presidential elections.

According to Dr Aggery Darko who spoke on Radio Univers’ Behind the Headlines, whether the national executives would be re-elected or not is dependent on the role they played towards the victory or otherwise of the party in the 2016 elections.

“Your ability to win is fundamental. And for me, whatever agenda anybody has… I will be extremely surprised. I find it extremely reprehensible that anybody will want to look to 2020 and would want to disregard 2016. I find it repugnant because you are interested in protecting the party; if the party wins 2016, it gives the party visibility. It gives you the state power and all the advantages. If any of the current executives would want to seek re-election, they [the delegates] would be looking at what role the person played towards the victory or defeat of the party in the election. Your ability to win is fundamental and for me,” he said.

The NPP over the past one year has been struggling to keep the peace with accusations and counter-accusation being traded among the rank and file of the party.

Many have argued that due to the ongoing internal wrangling within the NPP, the Ghanaian electorate is now torn between voting to retain an incompetent government and voting for a chaotic political party.

The party seems divided along the Alan Kyeremanteng and Nana Addo camps. It is believed that the Kufour/Alan Kyeremanteng faction in the party are not particularly happy about Nana Akufo-Addo being the party’s flag-bearer, and they intend to make him lose next year’s election.

Some have alleged that from the Agenda 2020 strategy, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has planted moles within its ranks and is secretly courting key members to break the wings of the NPP.
