The Best Fan Theories About the 'GoT' Finale

The series finale of Game of Thrones is almost here. After eight years of battles , beheadings , dragons , ice zombies , and creepy incest scenes , the hit HBO series will finally wrap up its sprawling storylines. (Don't worry, those prequels are on the way !)

The second-to-last Thrones episode, "The Bells," saw the demise of Cersei and Jaime Lannister , Lord Varys , Qyburn , The Hound , The Mountain , and Euron Greyjoy . But we still have a bunch of questions leading into the finale , including who will ultimately sit on the Iron Throne. As Sunday approaches, fans are sharing their theories on how the show will end-and we have to say, they're pretty compelling!

Here are some of the best fan theories about the Game of Thrones finale.

This fan theory is pretty popular, now that we know Cersei isn't the green-eyed person Arya is destined to kill. ( Cersei was crushed to death by a collapsing ceiling in episode five, cowering in the arms of her twin brother Jaime .) Dany has green eyes, and we know that Arya doesn't trust her one bit-especially not after the needless violence Dany inflicted on King's Landing .

Also, Arya's a trained assassin. Let's not forget that.

This theory comes courtesy of Vanity Fair's Joanna Robinson , who suggested that Sansa sent Arya to King's Landing with the goal, first and foremost, of protecting their brother. Will she end up killing Dany? Perhaps. But it's not her primary mission.

Robinson points out that episode four, "The Last of the Starks," cuts from Arya reminding Jon that they're family, to Arya telling The Hound (RIP) that she doesn't intend to return to Winterfell.

We've always wondered if there's more to Tyrion's lineage than meets the eye. Remember when he paid a solo visit to Dany's dragons and was able to touch them? Who but a true Targaryen could do that without getting killed?! Plus, it seems like a strange detail to introduce, and then never return to again. (But then again, Jaime's whole narrative arc ended up going down the toilet, so who really knows.)

Redditor mapps84 recently laid out a theory that Tyrion is a Targaryen, and also that he'll take the Iron Throne in the end:

"What if in the final episode it is revealed that Tyrion is indeed the son of Aerys (Mad King) and Joanna Lannister.

"I think this may become apparent when Danerys attempts to burn him with dragon fire for treason.

"In the books he dreams of dragons as a young boy. Tywin exclaims "You are no son of mine.

"He will not burn and his lineage will become apparent.

"I've come to this conclusion from the moments Bran has spent with Tyrion and looks Bran has given him."

Mapps84 adds that Davos-who's miraculously survived until now-could be Tyrion's hand. With Tyrion on the Iron Throne, you'd also have peaceful relations with Sansa and Winterfell.

Fans have been wondering if the Faceless Man who trained Arya in Braavos is ever going to, well, show his face again, and this fan had an interesting idea about how it could happen. (As a reminder, the second-to-last episode ended with Arya emerging from the ashes of King's Landing and riding off on a white horse.)

It makes sense. Jon Snow doesn't want to rule, and Dany is probably going to die. Taking the Iron Throne would be a fitting end to Sansa Stark's transformation from naive little girl to respected strategist.

Redditor leesq has a theory that Game of Thrones will wrap up with a political solution to the instability in Westeros-as opposed to a violent solution. As leesq points out, one final episode probably isn't enough time for anyone to kill Daenerys, Drogon, and Dany's fighting forces; it would be easier for Jon to marry Dany-which also "brings the show back to its beginning, cementing the inevitability of the wheel at both a macro and micro level."

Leesq writes:

"What we know: Varys has sent messages to (likely) every kingdom in the realm regarding Jon's claim to the the throne. These kingdoms will also learn of the nature of Dany's sack. Many of these kingdoms, as has already been explored, would already be uncomfortable with a female ruler who also happens to be a Targ, an outsider, and a war criminal. Jon, the Starks and Tyrion are likely all now opposed to the current administration.

I think a viable end game here is an arranged marriage between Jon and Dany to forestall a fresh round of realm-wide rebellion. My guess on how it goes down: Arya tries and fails in an assassination attempt and is either left dead or captured. Jon considers all his options and recognizes that there is no clear path to a military victory without thousands more and his family dying. He asks for a meeting with Dany and offers the same solution to the impending last last war that Dany accepted in Mereen: marriage. This keeps his family safe and installs him as a permanent counterweight to her worst impulses. Perhaps he also negotiates what Sansa had wanted previously: Winterfell as an independent kingdom."

Hey, it's always fun when thins wrap up with a wedding!

This theory comes from Josh St. Clair of Men's Health . He believes Tyrion will literally stab Dany in the back-the same way his brother, Jaime "Kingslayer" Lannister, killed Dany's father, the Mad King. According to St. Clair, that's the reason "The Bells" played up Tyrion and Jaime's bond: It was setting the stage for Tyrion to follow in his brother's exact footsteps.
