‘Dumsorisation’ of Africa must stop – Prof Lumumba

Ghana’s energy crisis has lingered on for close to three years.

Pan-Africanist Professor P.L.O Lumumba

The worsening energy crisis in Africa, particularly Ghana, has been met with revulsion from the Director at the Kenya School of Law, Professor P.L.O Lumumba over what he describes as failure on the part of leaders of the continent to put in measures to avert the situation.

According to Prof Lumumba who was speaking at the PAV Ansah Memorial Lecture in Accra on Friday under the theme: "Good governance, whither Africa?”, past leaders of the continent such as Ghana’s Dr. Kwame Nkrumah will be shocked to see the current state of his country after building the Akosombo Dam to provide Ghana with electricity.

He stated that an end must be put to the energy crisis.

“Dumsor Dumsor in the 21st century when in the 1950s Kwame Nkrumah said we must build the Akosombo Dam? And it’s not only in Ghana but in Gambia they may call it another name but it is ‘Dumsor Dumsor,’ in Kenya they call it by another name but it is ‘Dumsor Dumsor’. This dumsorisation of African continent must stop!” he fumed.

“And the reason why I think it should stop is that God is still very generous to us. This is the only continent that has sand throughout, this is the only continent that has wind throughout, this is the continent that has rivers throughout,” the Pan-Africanist and law Professor said.

Adding: “We are given the opportunity and we refuse to cease it that even when opportunity sits on our laps, we never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.”

Ghana’s energy crisis has lingered on for close to three years.

President Mahama, since 2012 has made several promises of an end to the crisis, but each deadline passed while the situation got worse. Many businesses have laid off workers because of high production cost as they resort to the use of generators.
