Meningitis Disease no more an epidemic - Health Minister

This follows records which indicate that no new deaths have been reported in the past one month.

Ghana's Health Minister, Alex Segbefia has revealed that his outfit has made significant improvement in the fight against meningitis across the country.

This follows records which indicate that no new deaths have been reported in the past one month.

The Pneumococcal Meningitis disease which began in Tain in the Brong Ahafo region in December 2015, spread to other areas including the Brong Ahafo, Northern, Ashanti, Eastern, Volta, Greater Accra, Upper West, Upper East and Western regions. The Central region, however, did not report any case.

Over 2000 cases have been recorded so far with 93 deaths being confirmed.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Segbefia said following actions taken in response to the outbreak, the disease is no more an epidemic.

"As at today, there is no district in the epidemic phase...We undertook multiple response actions and interventions that will require to contain the outbreak and bring it to a halt. The major pillars for interventions included enhanced surveillance, improved case management, social mobilisation, as well as, risk communication, vaccination and coordination."

Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meninges). Causes include bacterial, viral, parasites and even chemical.
