Asante Kotoko @91: Full list of all major trophies won by Ghana’s most successful football club

• Asante Kotoko are celebrating 91 years after adding the 2026 Democracy Cup to their trophy cabinet.

• The Porcupine Warriors have won Africa's premier club competition twice, in 1970 and 1983.

• Kotoko have also produced legendary players including Baba Yara, Osei Kofi, Ibrahim Sunday, Abdul Razak and Robert Mensah.

Asante Kotoko are celebrating 91 years of existence with another trophy in their cabinet after defeating arch-rivals Hearts of Oak to win the 2026 Democracy Cup.

Founded in Kumasi on August 31, 1935, the Porcupine Warriors have built one of the most decorated histories in Ghanaian football, winning major domestic honours and twice conquering Africa.

The latest success came on Friday, August 28, 2026, when Kotoko beat Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at the Baba Yara Stadium to win the Democracy Cup for the second time. The competition was introduced by Parliament in 2024 as part of activities to celebrate Ghana’s democratic journey.

As the club marks its 91st anniversary, here is a look at the major trophies that have shaped its history.

The league title is at the heart of Kotoko's domestic dominance. In its 91st anniversary statement, the club notated a record with 24 Ghana Premier League titles. Kotoko's league success stretches back to 1959 and includes periods of sustained dominance, particularly in the 1960s, 1980s and early 1990s. The club last won the league in the 2021-22 season.

Kotoko have also enjoyed considerable success in Ghana's premier knockout competition. According to Kotoko’s club record, the club has won the FA Cup nine trophies. The Porcupine Warriors have won the competition across different generations, including victories in 1958, 1960, 1978, 1984, 1998, 2001 and 2014 according to historical records. Kotoko also won the MTN FA Cup in 2025.

kotoko's trophy cabinet also contains several versions of Ghana's season-opening champions' competition. The Competition is played between the FA Cup winner and the GPL winner. According to the club’s records, the club has won three Super Cup titles among its major honours. More recently, Kotoko won the 2025 Champion of Champions by beating Gold Stars 1-0 at Duns Park. The GFA reported that the victory took their tally in that competition to four, including previous wins in 1977, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Medeama SC, the latest winners were crowned 2026 Champion of Champions winners after defeating MTN FA Cup holders Nations FC at the TnA Stadium. 

Kotoko have also been particularly successful in the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Cup. The Porcupine Warriors have won 16 SWAG Cup titles. The competition was one of the important annual trophies in Ghanaian football, and Kotoko's long list of victories includes a dominant run between 1988 and 1993.

Kotoko's greatest achievements, however, came on the continental stage. The club has won Africa's premier club competition twice, in 1970 and 1983. Their first triumph came in the African Cup of Champions Clubs, the predecessor to today's CAF Champions League.

Kotoko defeated TP Englebert of the then Zaire 2-1 in the second leg of the 1970 final to win the title on a 3-2 aggregate score. Thirteen years later, Kotoko returned to the top of African club football, defeating Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the 1983 final. Those two continental victories make Kotoko the only Ghanaian club to have won Africa's premier club competition twice.

Kotoko's continental pedigree was also recognised by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). The organisation named Asante Kotoko Africa's Club of the 20th Century, based on performances in African continental club competitions during the 20th century.

In the IFFHS ranking, Kotoko finished first among African clubs with 149 points, ahead of Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek. The ranking covered continental competitions and was presented as the organisation's historical assessment of clubs' achievements during the century.

The club was formally honoured alongside the other continental 'Clubs of the Century' at an IFFHS ceremony in London in 2010.

Behind the trophies are generations of players who helped establish the club's reputation. Some of the club’s legends include:
Osman Seidu Maada, popularly known as Baba Yara; Dogo Moro; Osei Kofi; Ibrahim Sunday; Malik Jabir; Robert Mensah; Abdul Razak, known as the Golden Boy; and Opoku Afriyie, popularly called Bayie. Baba Yara remains one of the most famous names associated with the club and Ghanaian football. Kumasi's major stadium was named the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in his honour.
