CK Akonnor slams Gor Mahia players over poor performance amid match-fixing allegations
Gor Mahia lost 5-1 to Pyramids FC and exited the CAF Champions League 7-1 on aggregate.
CK Akonnor blamed costly individual mistakes, particularly from experienced players, for the heavy defeat.
The Ghanaian coach said he was “really upset” with the performance and described the errors as unacceptable.
Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor has expressed his frustration with Gor Mahia’s players after the Kenyan champions suffered a heavy defeat to Pyramids FC and crashed out of the CAF Champions League.
Gor Mahia lost 5-1 to Pyramids in Cairo on Sunday, September 13, completing a 7-1 aggregate defeat after losing the first leg 2-0 in Nairobi a week earlier. In a viral video on social media, the team happened to concede ‘questionable’ goals and made mistakes which are linked to alleged match-fixing.
The result brought an early end to Gor Mahia’s 2026/27 Champions League campaign, with Akonnor particularly unhappy with the individual mistakes that allowed Pyramids to take control of the tie.
Akonnor also admitted that he normally avoids publicly singling out his players for criticism, but said the performance in Egypt made his disappointment impossible to hide.
“Today I am really upset. I am not the type of coach who likes to talk about players, but today it was so disappointing,” Akonnor said.
The Ghanaian coach said some of the mistakes were unacceptable, particularly from experienced players who are expected to handle pressure better.
“These are errors which players who are on a national level should know,” he said.
Akonnor had already challenged his players before the return leg to be disciplined and follow his instructions after the first-leg defeat.
“This was so disappointing to see from a team which we have encouraged to try and do well,” he concluded.
His concerns were exposed in Cairo as Pyramids punished Gor Mahia's defensive errors.
