Residential and non-residential electricity consumers in the country will enjoy a 13% reduction in tariff beginning January next year, the Finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta said in Parliament during the 2018 budget presentation Wednesday.

“Government in 2018, will work towards keeping the lights on at affordable rates to consumers, particularly industries and small businesses through reform and policy interventions over a two-year period.

But some energy experts including Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey believe that government is assuming the role of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), as they argue that PURC has the sole mandate of setting the tariffs.

However, Mr. Boakye Agyarko said the position taken by the energy experts is rather unfortunate, considering the government has only made a proposal to the PURC about the tariff reduction after doing their calculation.

To the Energy Minister, the PURC would be robbing the general public if it does not accept the government’s proposal.

Mr. Boakye Agyarko asked the experts to read Section 3 of the PURC Act 538 and quit ‘parroting’ ignorantly.
