In the age of Instagram and Snapchat, there’s no shortage of celebrities oversharing every detail of their lives.

But Katy Perry took it to a higher extreme than we’ve ever witnessed (no pun intended) when she livestreamed every single moment of her life for an entire weekend on her YouTube channel. The 100-hour long experience (or experiment?) was intended to build up hype for her new album, Witness.

While fans got to see her do mundane things like sleep, cook, and eat, there were also some intensely emotional moments. During a therapy session with licensed marriage and family therapist Dr. Siri Singh, things got real.

At the start of the session, Singh asked Katy to “take a rest for a minute” and invited “Katheryn Hudson” (her real name) to start speaking. She talked about times when Katheryn “comes out to play”—for example, when she’s with her sister, when she’s with her family on holidays, and other times when she can just rest, relax, and surrender.

Then the 32-year-old started to open up about why she feels like her "Katy Perry" side is more of a persona than people realize. “I’ve built up this Katy Perry thing that everybody knows and that’s the reason why they’re tuning in and it’s fantastic, but it’s more of a facade than it is real.”

“I’m really strong as Katy Perry,” she tells Singh. “I guess I’m not as strong as Katheryn Hudson.” As the therapist reassures her that’s okay, she explains why that affected her decision to cut her hair, a change she unveiled in early March.

“People talk about my hair and they don’t like it, or they wish it were longer, and like, I so badly want to be Katheryn Hudson that I don’t even want to look like Katy Perry anymore sometimes,” she says. “And that is a little bit of why I cut my hair, because I really want to be my authentic self, like 100 percent. So it hurts when I don’t feel like I can.”

Watch her emotional discussion on her identity and her hair below (start at around the 10 minute mark):

Kudos to Katy for making a beauty decision based on what feels right to her—not based on everyone else's opinions.
