Ndiva Women’s Film Festival officially launched in Accra
The annual event will create a space for creative filmmakers to exhibit their works, network, mentor, collaborate and celebrate each other.
Founded by Aseye Tamakloe, Ndiva Women’s Film Festival is a festival for African women filmmakers and women filmmakers of African descent in the film chain. They include directors, camera women, directors, production designers, marketers, editors, animators, etc.
Speaking to Pulse.com.gh, the President of NWFF, Aseye Tamakloe said the event is exclusive to women filmmakers of African descent in the film business and would be a platform for the filmmakers to exhibit genuine African stories.
Aseye stated: “People have tried. This is not the first film festival for women (in Africa) but they ain’t many as compared to the others (male dominated festivals).

"Of course, there are a few around the world but this film festival is meant for women filmmakers of African descent in the film chain. Because, in as much as our stories are similar worldwide, these women also have certain realities so the need to create that space where we can share, collaborate, encourage and celebrate each other," she said.
She said the number of women participating in the film industry has increased over the years but hardly do people talk about them.
“Film will forever be with us – we have done so much for film and we are still doing so much. If you check the statistics in Ghana, we find more women financing films lately but people hardly talk about it.”

In terms of funding, Aseye and her team are going to rely on the little fund they have raised so far.

The Guest of Honours at the event, Professor Esi Sutherland, educationists and human rights activist, and Dr Mary Ashun, an author and the Principal of Ghana International School (GIS), urged female African filmmakers to produce inspiring stories for the film industry. They also urged the government to support the cause.
The first edition of Ndiva Women’s Film Festival is scheduled for November this year.
