The government has announced plans to set up a Renewable Energy Authority to oversee the country’s strive towards green energy.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Energy, Boakye Agyarko, at a meeting with the American Chamber of Commerce.

The authority will ensure that Ghana’s hopes to produce 10 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources such as wind, solar and biogas becomes a realisation.

That target is expected to be achieved by the year 2030. Currently, renewable energy is estimated to contribute a mere one percent to Ghana’s energy needs. Ghana is home to BXC solar plant, the largest solar farm in West Africa.

Energy expects believe that Ghana has enormous potential for renewable energy because of natural advantages such as year round sunshine for solar and wind for wind power.
Ghana has been battling to meet its energy demands for domestic and industrial purposes. The problem, which has become aggravated over the last decade, has led to many industries collapsing leading to massive layoffs.
The power crisis is known locally as ‘dumsor’.
