Renowned Basketball promoter and CEO of Rite Limited, Yaw Sakyi Afari, has hinted of creating a national tertiary football league to utilize the untapped potential of soccer players at that level.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Pulse Sports, he confirmed that major associations with international partners and football organizations were being deliberated and that Ghanaians should watch out for the biggest sporting platform to be created ever at the tertiary education level.

“We’ve done basketball for ten years. It’s time to extend the brand. We’re starting the tertiary football league which would be the biggest sports conversation in the coming years," Yaw Sakyi told Pulse.com.gh.

Yaw Sakyi has pioneered what has become the biggest growing sport in Ghana in the past few years, helping to pique the interest of the youth in Basketball.

He is renowned for his efforts and achievements in Ghana’s basketball fraternity, and has helped develop the sport by organising community leagues, as well as other competitions at the tertiary level – with the Sprite Ball competition being the biggest of all.

The popular basketball promoter said people are yearning for an all-year round football league in their universities and polytechnics but had been denied the chance due to the unavailability of a platform.

He revealed that he and his team were already in talks with football agents “to come and identify players and place them in the best teams in our Ghanaians league.”

He also spoke of the possibility of bringing in international scouts to help offer opportunities to some of the young talents who will be discovered.

“We’re trying to create an opportunity for the pool of talents that already exists in the nation. Ghana is already noted across the world for the potential it has in football so it won’t be difficult to carry the dream across and get people on board.”

Yaw Sakyi was last month awarded the ‘Exclusive Man of the Year Sports’ at the EMY Awards after beating off competition from the likes of Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi and ex-Black Stars defender Tony Baffoe. He was honoured in light of his immense contribution towards the promotion of basketball for the last decade.
