Hashim Amla says South Africa's batsmen must recover from a crisis of confidence in order to get back into the series against England after suffering an emphatic defeat in the first Test.
A lack of runs cost the Proteas in their recent 3-0 series defeat in India and it was the same story against England at Kingsmead.
The top-ranked team in Test cricket were bowled out for only 214 in the first innings to trail by 89 and then collapsed from 85-1 to 174 all out second time around to slump to a 241-run defeat.
South Africa have now failed to pass 250 in their last 10 innings in Test cricket and captain Amla knows that is not good enough ahead of the second Test in the four-match series at Newlands, which starts on Sunday.

Reflecting on their defeat in Durban, the Proteas skipper said: "Dean Elgar played superbly. It was great to see him at his best. I'm really happy for him.
"It's more about confidence [rather than technique]. Once you get runs, you play differently. The only way you can do that is get the runs. We have to patient with the younger guys and it is down to the likes of myself to get runs.
"I can't fault the bowlers. They were exceptional in India and here. They have kept the team in a good space in that regard. We need to get runs on the board to back them up.
"The wicket played better than we thought it would, but we would have taken them to be 40-3. Our first innings batting let us down. We couldn't put the pressure on the English."
He added: "It's been a tough Test year for us, hopefully 2016 will be different for us.
"They played really well, but we didn't do our job. They are a well-oiled team. Hopefully this will be a good series and we can go to Newlands and get a win, then win the series 3-1."
Steven Finn finished the second innings with figures of 4-42 and man of the match Moeen Ali (3-47) took three wickets on day five as England bowled the Proteas out before lunch.
South Africa have called up uncapped all-rounder Chris Morris and wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock for the second Test, with Dale Steyn expected to miss out due to a shoulder injury.
