Where was Chernobyl filmed?
Chernobyl was mostly filmed in Visaginas, Lithuania, because Ignalina, Chernobyls sister power plant, is located in the city. In fact, Ignalina is so similar to Chernobyl that it was shut down in 2009 due to fears that there could be a disaster similar to the one in Ukraine.

Filming took place in the spring and summer of 2018, and Chernobyl's creator Craig Mazin told The Express that shooting at the plant had some complications: "It was difficult. They are decommissioning it [Ignalina]. I think they had said they had decommissioned it but one day we couldnt shoot there because they were moving stuff around, so sounds like they are still decommissioning it but it is not a normal shoot day when you show up and work and you hand over your passport and they keep it. It was pretty intense."

The city of Vilnius, Lithuania, was used to portray the Ukrainian city of Pripyat, and According to IMDB , other scenes in the were shot in Kaunas, Lithuania, Kyiv, Ukraine, and Chernobyl, Ukraine itself.
It's unclear if the crew actually went to Chernobyl or just used drone footage. Jonas pokas is the CEO of Baltic Locations, the company that managed Chernobyls filming locations, and he told Skycop that his team "went to the Chernobyl zone to see how some of the old villages look like. However, its not a good place to film, its very remote and offers nothing you cant find in Lithuania. Its all abandoned, while we needed Pripyat to be alive."
