Bernard Tomic into last eight at Ecuador Open

Bernard Tomic advanced to the Ecuador Open quarter-finals as the seeds were largely untroubled in Quito on Wednesday.

The Australian top seed claimed a rare clay-court win by overcoming Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3 2-6 6-4 in the second round.

Tomic won just two matches on clay last year, but is already on his way to matching that tally in 2016.

The world number 20 sent down nine aces and, despite dropping his level in the second set, completed his win in one hour, 37 minutes.

Tomic seemed to lose concentration during the second set – framing an overhead on set point – before composing himself in the third.

Awaiting him in the last eight is Paolo Lorenzi after the Italian sixth seed eased past Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-3 6-2.

Also setting up a quarter-final clash were Thomaz Bellucci and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Bellucci, the Brazilian third seed, needed just an hour to beat Spanish veteran Albert Montanes 6-2 6-4.

Spanish eighth seed Carreno Busta was challenged much more before edging past countryman Inigo Cervantes 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-2) 6-2.
