Deputy Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. (Mrs) <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/politics/awutu-senya-west-ndc-youth-organiser-attacked-with-cutlass-over-ghcent400-campaign-2024081310094013877">Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui</a>, has urged stakeholders to unite behind a new vision of sustainable and inclusive infrastructure development to drive both national and regional growth.

She made this appeal as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2025 International Building, Infrastructure &amp; Investment Expo (IBIXPO 2025), held at the Accra International Conference Centre from September 12th to 14th, 2025.

Image Consortium organised the three-day conference and exhibition in partnership with Global Afrisino. It brought together policymakers, industry leaders, financiers, and innovators to explore solutions under the theme “Building Resilient Infrastructure for Sustainable Growth and Regional Integration.”

The event opened with addresses from Eugenia Adjorkor France, COO of Image Consortium, and Mr Albert Mensah, CEO of Global Afrisino, who both highlighted the Expo’s objectives of bridging knowledge gaps, fostering partnerships, and unlocking investment opportunities in infrastructure.

A call to rethink how we design, build, and sustain the systems that power our economies and connect our communities. Resilient infrastructure goes beyond concrete and steel — it is about creating networks and frameworks that withstand the test of time, unlock opportunities, and drive inclusive development for generations to come.”</blockquote>

Following these remarks, Hon. Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui delivered her keynote speech, stressing the importance of resilient and sustainable infrastructure, accountable financing, and robust public-private partnerships as the key to closing Ghana’s infrastructure gaps and accelerating growth.

The Deputy Minister stressed that collaborative effort is essential to achieve resilient infrastructure that drives economic transformation, strengthens communities, and protects the environment for future generations. She urged policymakers, the private sector, development partners, and civil society to work together in reshaping Ghana’s infrastructure landscape and that of the wider region.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), Nana Dwemoh Benneh, also addressed the gathering, emphasising the need for financing models that align with ethics, sustainability, and climate resilience.

That is why platforms like this conference are so important; they bring stakeholders together to openly discuss these priorities and shape collective solutions. While international financing remains crucial, Ghana must also deepen its ability to mobilise local funding. The stronger we are internally, the more we can leverage external support. As a fund, we are proud to be associated with this dialogue and optimistic that the conversations here will help build a more resilient future for infrastructure development in our country.”</blockquote>

<h2>From Polling Booths to Crime Scenes: An Escalating Trend</h2>

Electoral violence in Ghana has become alarmingly consistent. Recent elections have seen spikes in intimidation, physical assault, and blatant impunity.

<h3>2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon By-election</h3>

A seemingly routine by-election erupted into violence when masked national security operatives stormed <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/politics/ayawaso-violence-no-armed-men-deployed-to-polling-stations-ec-2024080604075526584">the La-Bawaleshie polling station</a>, firing live rounds and assaulting unarmed civilians. Nearly 20 people were injured, prompting the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to withdraw from the contest.A Commission of Inquiry led by Justice Emile Short gathered testimony from over 20 key figures, including MP Sam George and the NDC’s Delali Kwasi Brempong. Although the Commission recommended compensation and security sector reforms, <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/politics/ayawaso-west-wuogon-short-cssions-white-paper-report-useless-ndcs-kwasi-brempong-2024080909445378302">the government rejected many of its findings in a White Paper</a>, fuelling public scepticism.

Official reports confirmed five deaths and 19 injuries following disputes and violence at polling stations and during post-election protests. A particularly controversial incident involved then-Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson, who admitted on live television that she had discharged a firearm at a voter registration centre in Kasoa. While she claimed she acted in self-defence, eyewitnesses accused her aides of firing multiple shots and intimidating registrants. Despite the outcry, no charges were filed.

A peace pact signed ahead of the vote did little to prevent bloodshed. At least six fatalities were recorded, primarily from clashes between the two major parties, the NPP and the NDC.

<h3>The Ablekuma North Rerun : A Snapshot of Systemic Failure</h3>

The parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North on 11 July 2025, held across 19 polling stations, descended into disorder:Thugs attacked the NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, former minister Hawa Koomson, party agents, and journalists. The police allegedly did little to intervene.Three journalists were assaulted. One was slapped by a police officer, another was pepper-sprayed and rendered unconscious.

<h2>What’s Driving the Surge in Electoral Violence?</h2>

Ghana’s deepening electoral violence is underpinned by a growing culture of impunity. Those responsible for acts of violence during elections often face no consequences, sending a dangerous signal that such behaviour is tolerated. This lack of accountability not only emboldens perpetrators but also weakens the rule of law. Compounding this issue is the persistence of political vigilantism. Despite the passage of the Vigilantism and Related Offences Act in 2019, many of these groups continue to function, often under rebranded identities, serving as unofficial enforcers for political parties with little to no fear of punishment.

The complicity or inaction of security forces further aggravates the situation. In several instances, including the Ablekuma North rerun, security personnel reportedly stood by while attacks were carried out, and in some cases, were directly involved. Such behaviour undermines public confidence in law enforcement. Additionally, the intensely competitive nature of Ghana’s elections, where outcomes are sometimes decided by razor-thin margins, fuels a perception that winning at all costs is justified. This escalating tension, combined with repeated incidents of unaddressed violence, has led to a dangerous erosion of public trust in the electoral system, pushing some citizens into disengagement while others feel compelled to take justice into their own hands.

To curb the growing trend of electoral violence, Ghana must commit to enforcing the law without favour. Every case of violence, regardless of political affiliation, must be investigated and prosecuted. Security officers who abuse their power or fail to act must face disciplinary and legal action. Equally important is the urgent need to dismantle political vigilante groups. <a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/militia-groups-political-vigilante-groups-pose-threat-to-security-nunoo-mensah-2024080203305875036">The Vigilantism Act must be strictly applied</a>, with security agencies identifying and shutting down all unregulated groups that pose a threat to peaceful elections.

Protecting journalists is also essential to safeguarding the democratic process. Media personnel must be guaranteed safety at polling stations, and any attacks, especially those involving law enforcement, must be prosecuted without delay. Furthermore, electoral reforms should include decentralising key aspects of the Electoral Commission's operations to enhance local accountability and responsiveness. Finally, civic education and peacebuilding efforts must go beyond slogans. Civil society, religious leaders, and traditional authorities need to be actively engaged in fostering dialogue and promoting non-violent participation throughout the electoral cycle.

Electoral violence is not inevitable, but it is persistent. The events in<a target="_blank" class="editor-link" href="https://www.pulse.com.gh/articles/news/i-dont-feel-sorry-for-hawa-koomson-she-deserves-it-hannah-bissiw-on-brutal-beating-2025071209131298356"> Ablekuma North</a> serve as a stark warning, unless systemic reforms are enacted and enforced, these incidents will escalate, threatening Ghana’s democratic integrity.Ghana has overcome challenges in the past. The resilience of its people, institutions, and civic movements remains strong. But if violence is allowed to become an accepted feature of competitive politics, the very foundation of democratic governance will be at risk.

In an exclusive cooking session, the chef didn’t just share her recipe; she brought Nicholas into the heart of the process, teaching him step-by-step how to prepare the iconic Akan delicacy.

Chef Abbys began by walking Nicholas through the basics. “First, we wash and peel all the plantains,” she instructed. Together, they boiled the plantains and eggs for about 10 minutes, draining the water afterward and keeping them covered to retain the heat.Then came the traditional tools: the Ayewa (clay grinding pot) and ɛta (wooden masher). “Now, grind the pepper and three spring onions,” she said, guiding Nicholas as he learned to use the tools like a pro.

After seasoning with salt, she had him add the hot plantains into the Ayewa. “Mash it while it's still hot,” she advised, “and make sure it’s smooth before it cools down.”They stirred in the groundnut paste and continued mashing until the mixture was evenly blended. Meanwhile, Chef Abbys heated palm oil and fried the salted fish to a crisp. She poured the infused oil into the mashed plantain, letting Nicholas mix it all in.

To finish, they chopped the rest of the spring onions and sprinkled them along with fried groundnuts over the top. Sliced boiled eggs and ripe pear completed the beautifully traditional plate.

Moved by the gap in access to foundational learning in his area, Yaw established the Adangabey Royal International School—the first private school in Gbedema. The existing government school in the district only accepts children from age five, leaving younger children without options. His school, however, admits learners as young as two, offering them an early and vital start to their academic journey.

Operating out of a modest two-bedroom rented space, the school has enrolled over 160 pupils, spanning nursery to Primary 4. Despite financial constraints, Yaw ensures that no child is turned away due to inability to pay. Fees are capped at GHS 120, with flexible payment plans designed to accommodate struggling families.

The school’s impact extends beyond the classroom. It instils discipline, nurtures confidence, and raises the aspirations of children in a district that has long lacked educational infrastructure.

Community members and parents have praised the transformation in their children’s lives, noting significant improvements in both attitude and ambition.

At 56, Martha stands as a pillar of strength and compassion in Kumasi. Inspired by her own experience as the mother of a child with cerebral palsy, she founded the KSPC Foundation in 2002 to offer support to other families facing similar challenges. What began with advocacy on radio, particularly through Adom FM, has evolved into a full-fledged community support organisation providing therapy, rehabilitation, and a makeshift daycare centre.

The foundation currently supports 32 children—14 of whom live at the facility and 18 who receive regular outpatient care. In addition, four street children have been placed in Martha’s care by the Department of Social Welfare. Her services not only offer medical and emotional support but also enable parents—especially single mothers—to work and regain financial stability.

Martha’s work goes beyond caregiving. She is a fierce advocate for inclusion and disability rights, using media, workshops, and policy engagement to fight stigma and build awareness. Despite limited funding—much of which she provides from her own pocket—she continues to serve with unwavering dedication.

Supporters describe her as “a strong, selfless woman” who has inspired many to do more for others. Her efforts are seen not only as acts of compassion but as steps toward building a more inclusive society for children with special needs.

She received GH¢60,000 to expand her work supporting vulnerable women through skills training and financial empowerment.

Sakina said after receiving the award at a ceremony held on Friday, 30 May, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra.

Sakina's work began during the peak of the Bawku chieftaincy conflict, when many women lost their homes, spouses, and livelihoods. Rather than stand by, she took action—using her own resources to train widows and vulnerable women in agro-processing, including peanut butter production, oil extraction, and rice processing.

Beyond skills training, she supplies raw materials to help these women start their businesses and also provides financial literacy education. One of her most impactful innovations is the Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA), a community-based financial model offering savings and microloans in an area where traditional banking services are unavailable due to ongoing conflict.

More than 50 women have so far benefited directly from her programme. Many are now running small businesses, paying for their children’s education, and regaining their financial independence. Her leadership as a queen mother in her traditional area further amplifies her influence, earning her widespread respect and trust in the community.

Her nominator, Lydia Apipi from Binduri, described her as “a leading light in a highly tense municipality,” adding that her work symbolises both resilience and healing.

The ceremony took place on the evening of Friday, 30 May, at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, celebrating a decade-long tradition of honouring selfless individuals creating positive change in Ghanaian communities.

Dr Dwamena-Aboagye was presented with a cash prize of GH¢100,000 in recognition of her over 20 years of service to society-particularly her work championing gender equality, offering legal and psychosocial support for victims of abuse, and providing educational and economic opportunities for marginalised groups.Her journey began in the early 2000s when she left a flourishing legal career to establish The Ark Foundation, Ghana’s first shelter for battered women.

Over the years, she has led advocacy campaigns against domestic violence, trained community leaders and professionals, and provided safe spaces and support systems for vulnerable women and children. Her contributions have helped shape national discourse and policies surrounding gender-based violence and women’s empowerment.
