I didn’t do national service – Ayorkor Botchwey explains
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey was responding to a question by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the immediate past former deputy minister of education, about the absence of national service on her curriculum vitae.
In her defence, she said she completed school a year ahead of the implementation of the mandatory element associated with national service.
“I did not do national service…the law came into effect a year after I left school,” she said.
National service is mandatory for one year for all graduates of tertiary institutions in the country. Unlike countries such as Israel, service is not limited to the army, but in all public and private organisations.
The minister designate appeared before the Vetting Committee of Parliament on Monday to answer questions ahead of her imminent approval.
