This must not happen again - Mahama

Over 100 people are dead and fears the number could rise as the salvage operation continues.

The president John Dramani Mahama says the floods that have taken over Accra should not be allowed to happen again

He was speaking at a visit to the Goil Filling station at Circle, which was the scene of an explosion that killed 100 people and injured several others after a heavy downpour on Wednesday.

“A lot of people have lost their lives, many of them through the floods and very many of them through the fire at the filling station,” the President said.

“We have to take some measures to deal with this but a lot of times when the steps are drastic, you have people expressing sympathy,” he stated

“We must sit and strategize to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” President Mahama told the press.

Accra experiences frequent floods every year but the death count from the floods of Wednesday night are reported to be amongst the heaviest ever recorded with the previous worst recorded deaths standing at 17 in 2001.
